Hi, I have a 2003 4dr trd tacoma. I have been searching for quite some time and can't seem to find an answer. The problem is when I am stopping it feels as if the rear end is jerk ing forward and same when taking off from the stop. It also happens when going over some big bumps in the road like an uneven man hole or something. It feels like everything is moving as one or like a transmission mount is broken. I have spent a lot of time under this truck trying to figure it out and can't find it. People have claimed that it is axle wrap bit it is defiantly not the case. I replaced the carrier bearing and added AALs. It has gotten a little bit better but is still there.
Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

Have you checked the state of motor and transmission mounts? It definitely does sound like symptoms of axle wrap, but possibly not. Do you have any photos of your rear suspension, transmission mount, etc? Is your truck a 4x4?

Yes it is 4x4. I don't have pictures of the suspension at this time. It's all stock in the back other than 5100 bilstein and the add a leaf I haven't checked motor mounts but I will have to take a look tomorrow

Try greasing the driveshaft, rear propeller shaft(?), I had the symptoms on a 1999 and found this did the trick. Should be more information somewhere in the worldwideweb

we had a 08 4 runner that did that, I never did figure out what the problem was. It did seem like a transmission issue but it never slipped or had any problems.

Search the term "axle wrap", sounds exactly like it to me. Basically the leaf springs bind up with tension and then release it when you come to a stop (or start moving from a stop) and it feels like someone's tapped your bumper from behind.

El Guaco Taco: Silver 2001 Tacoma Prerunner V6 TRD off-road
I have a 2001 Tacoma 3.4 V6 Prerunner (2WD) Automatic. She's old (307k mi), but the engine looks and runs like new. The transmission runs smoothly.... once it's in drive/reverse. When I shift from P to R or D, it jolts forward/backward significantly. Shifting to R also causes a somewhat loud clanging noise. Other than that issue, the transmission fluid has been replaced liberally and it runs fine (no slipping/bad shifting). It consistently jolts shifting from cold, and most times when warm, but not always. I assume this may be a worn tranny mount allowing extra movement. I also can confirm that there is some rear diff damage (ring and pinion wear) which has caused a howling noise between certain speeds. This may also be the main driveshaft support bearing, which, in combination with loose transmission mounts, makes for a pretty loose drivetrain. Another symptom which may point to the support bearing is a rough sound when coasting (no gas) which occurs about 70 percent of the time. Its paired with noticeable drag/loss of momentum in coasting. This could also be the worn ring and pinion, but I changed the gear oil yesterday, finding only a small amount of metal discharge on the drain plug magnet.

    Listed Symptoms:
    - Jolt into R/D
    - clang with shift into R
    - Howling from rear
    - Rough sound when coasting (which has gotten louder)

    My diagnoses:
    - Tranny mount
    - driveshaft support bearing
    - ring and pinion
    - U joint(s)

    Any thoughts? Much appreciated!
