Tailgate ladder

I've seen a few tail gate ladders on various PUs. I am looking at the ones that bolt to the tailgate and fold out to the driver side. Is there any problem bolting to the Taco tailgate? Any recommendations on manufacturers or models?

 

I am curious about your post. What do you intend to do with the tailgate ladder? Meaning what is the purpose of it? I ask because I don't know.

Why not a bumper step/ bedstep? Those can be used with the tailgate in either position.

 

The Amazon ladder is the type I was looking at. Is it durable? Is drilling into the tailgate a risk (wires, etc)? The reason for it is to haul my tired hind end into the bed when I need to get into it.

 

I don't know how a bumper step / bedstep works. I don't a ladder I have to carry and then lose or have stolen.

 

I understand now. A lot of people stand by the bed step for their Tacoma. It gets bolted into the back and then you press to lower and it is a step. This might work for you. Here is a video showing how it installs and how it works:

Does that help? Given that this is a Toyota OEM product, you should have no problems with the install, impacting wires, etc.

My wife is vertically challenged and I installed one of those. They are spring loaded and I'm impressed how easy they are to manipulate into position. Happy wife, happy life.

That dude in the video made it more work than necessary to install the step. You don't need a vice to hold/attach the two pieces. Bolting it on from underneath is not problematic as he made it out to be either.

Yep! This fold out step works great! Very convenient and very easy to use. Your knee's will thank you.

The only problem I encountered installing a bedstep was breaking the bolts loose under the truck. They don’t appear to have any thread locker. Just installed dry and very tight. But a good breaker bar solved that issue.

 

My 60 year old knees love my OEM bed step! Very functional add-on for us aging boomers!

 

Agree on old knees. My Tundras had enough bumper to step up on with the tailgate down. Not so with the Tacoma.

Agree that the guy made the install more complicated than it needs to be. My buddy installed the step in about 30 minutes and it was super easy.

I was just passing along the video because it was the quickest way to show the OP what the bed step was and how it functioned. It is a great little accessory and tucks away when you don't need it. I believe that the folks at AMP make it for Toyota, if I am not mistaken.

The OEM bed step is great, agree with the use of a breaker bar for the install.
