Hi all...you have always been so helpful. I have a 2017 TRD Off Road 4x4 Access Cab. In the morning when I am backing out of the garage and apply brakes when backing out, I hear a squeak coming from the front of the Tacoma. But I have noticed that when I move forward and apply brakes, I do not hear the squeak coming from the front end. I also notice that when the Tacoma is stopped and I stand on the front end bumper and jump up and down, I hear a squeak.

Do any of you good folks have any thoughts on what is the problem and a possible fix?

I just inspected the front and rear brakes and all seems OK as well as no leaks. Shocks look ok and no leaks anywhere. When I drive and apply brakes all seems normal with the Tacoma. Again, any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

Sway bar bushings? You could easily remove the sway bar and see if it goes away. If so cheap and easy fix!

Hi CalcityRenegade and thanks for your reply. I do not notice any of the symptoms associated with a bad sway bar as shown below. My Tacoma has only 27,000 miles on it. Thanks again .
    • Clunking noise
    • Rattling noise
    • Knocking uneven noise road
    • Lack of stability when driving
    • Noise going over speed bumps
    • Poor handling when turning

Lack of knocking noise doesn't necessarily mean that isn't the issue, especially if the joints are lacking grease or just plain starting to go bad.

I've replaced sway bar bushings on numerous vehicles that were only squeaking/screeching whilst going over bumps. I wouldn't rule it out. Easy to check without spending any money. Rubbers can make noises. Especially if some dirt worked its way in.

Hi guys and thanks for your comments. With only 27,000 miles on my 2017 tacoma, I'm thinking that the ball joints are OK...I could be wrong. I have also reviewed sway bars and found out that a sway bar can actually be removed which helps off road but affects on highway driving...but is not really a necessary part depending on the situation you are in.

    Thanks again.

Just got your reply CalcityRenegade. I hear you...but a question...If dirt has gotten in in the bishings, is there a spray of some kind that be sprayed into or around the bushings that can alleviate the dirt and therefore the squeak? I also just inspected the sway bar and connected parts and all seems ok...no noises or looseness.

The bushings are practically clamped onto the sway bar so a penetrate may not be able to get in and alleviate the noise. You could give it a try and see what happens. Easy enough to do.

    Try a food-grade silicone spray.

Hi all. Well with the help of your thoughts and comments, I was able to isolate the squeak with the help of a buddy. I crawled under the tacoma and my buddy moved the front drivers door up and down to activate the squeak and give me time to locate the source. The squeak was coming from the drivers side rear leaf spring. So I sprayed the bushings with a silicone based lubricant and the rebound clips with WD40 as well as the springs themselves with WD40.

Anyway, I am happy to say the the squeak has been alleviated and the source found. Apparently a little dirt and debri from 4 wheeling got in the leaf springs and caused the squeak. So once found, required a little cleaning and lubricant.

Thanks again everyone for your assistance and concern. I have always appreciated the quality and character of this forums members.

For what its worth it was a real pita when i owned the tundra with the leaf springs squeaking, and clunking...put up with it for over 10 years till i took them apart, and inserted these hard thermo plastic strips between the leafs i cut out from an old snowmobile belly pan. Problem solved.
On my 2020 tacoma i had cosmolined those rear leaf springs pretty heavy....maybe killed 2 birds with one stone....no squeaking...yet.
