What is this part? Why is it running?

What is this part? Why did I hear/find it running at 10pm when the truck was off and locked? And why did it cause my pro grille raptor lights to be one while it was running? It probably ran for 10 minutes or so (I think). When it stopped the raptor lights shut off. I’ve never seen this happen before. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t I’ve just never seen it. It’s a 2021 SR5 4x4. Thanks for any help.

That is an evap pump. I believe it runs to either purge pressure in the fuel system, or to do some kind of self test. Normal for it to run at random times. As far as your lights, I would assume that whatever switched power you grabbed is also activated to run this pump.

Because you’ve added a circuit to the injector fuse for the raptor lights. Mine did the same thing.

So that’s why the lights can on? But the pump running is normal?

Yes that’s normal if you’ve added a circuit to the 10 amp injector fuse in the engine bay fuse box. Usually after a drive or middle of the night, the truck does what I think is a self check and if you’ve put raptor lights to the injector fuse, it will momentarily power on. Don’t worry, the raptor lights draw very little power since they are small leds.

Put the add a fuse to the 10 amp low beam fuse in the engine bay fuse box. You really don’t need the raptor lights during the day.

At least you didn’t find out about this while sleeping in the back of your truck in the middle of nowhere.

Hard disagree. If he found out sleeping in the back of his truck in the middle of nowhere, well, at least he’d be doing something cool.

My old WRX would do that in the middle of the night, it’s normal like everyone has said. It has something to do with the fuel pump or fuel related as others have stated too. I’ve heard my wife’s outback do it too. Japanese cars making weird noises at night haha.

Its part of the evap system. It pumps a vacuum on the tank and canister and then shuts off, waits, and watches to see if the vacuum bleeds down.

If it holds vacuum for X amount of time, the system is leak free

If the vacuum bleeds down it sets evap leak codes (small, large, gross, etc)

If the vacuum goes down slowly, thats "small leak detected "

A faster drop in vacuum is a "large leak"

"Gross leak" means too big to measure. As in, the vacuum pump can't generate any vacuum at all. Like when the gas cap is left completely off.. or a big-ish evap hose is broken off
