I’m having trouble finding it... is there a toolbox that fits in a 3rd gen shortbed that’s not ridiculously pricey?

    Not really...
Paid just under $600 for a matte black camlocker today.
Been pleased with them. I have one in my tacoma, F250 and Polaris Ranger.
I have a cheap craftsman from lowes in my 1987 toyota xtra cab

UWS "Slimline". May not fit your idea of "not pricy", but it's a nice smaller box for these trucks that doesn't take up a ton of space. I think the 63" version would be about right for the Gen2 and Gen3 Tacomas. Run about $470 to $530 or so.

They also make a slimline in "low profile" version.

I had the 60" slimline on a Gen1. Good tool box. Could fit a 48" hi-lift jack in it, and plenty of other tools and parts.

I've been using a Husky toolbox from Home Depot. I think it was around $300.

Craftsman at Lowe’s sales one for $200. I’ve had one for the past two years with no issues. I use it daily

I have UWS and happy with it for 5 years. Be careful to mount even on bed rails (it’s not as wide) and don’t have it on the small front rail which is 1/4” higher because it will sit at an angle and mess up the rail caps. Otherwise, it’s a good box.
