My key is basic metal key. Nothing fancy. Why the heck do places want $120 - $125 to copy a damn truck key ?

Is there a better option out there ?

I think they think they have to program the key.

1st gens never had "chipped" keys.

Almost all 2nd gens have chips in the keys and I think all 3rd gens have chips.

    Weird.

I got mine cut free from a mobile locksmith; he literally gave me a new key and cut it too.

I've got 3 total keys now.

Just go through one of them and I bet they'd charge you less than 10 bucks total.

Is your truck a base model or does it have power windows and locks? I’ve got a base model 2nd Gen and I’ve had keys made at Home Depot for a little more than two dollars!

You have a second gen, replying in the first gen section.

Key fobs were separate from keys themselves for all first gens.

I use to cut my own for like 1.50 when I worked at the local hardware store.

Post a picture of your key.

If it does not have the letter "G" stamped on the key, there is no chip.

    It can be cut anywhere.

I was down to one key for my '96 Tacoma and it was very worn so dropped by McGeorge Toyota had them make me a few new ones.
I was getting concerned my old key would be too worn to make new and may stop starting my truck.
They did a great job and the new keys sure look A LOT better. Only $8.75 per key including cutting it.
I was surprised as they don't even need an old key as they can grind new from your VIN#. Just need your registration or title to prove ownership.

Either way, it's a very cheap job.

Knee jerk reaction is they tend to think it's a chip key. I went with my wife's old 2005 Rav4 key and they thought so but I told them it's not a chip..$3.50 later I was on my way.

The plastic end is just for gripping better. You can also get plastic wallet keys made by order. They’re only for opening your door (disclaimer). They could snap in two using them in the ignition slot. Just thought I’d throw that in.

Are you saying the below are only for opening your door as they could snap in two using them in the ignition slot?

WalMart wouldn't cut mine, they said it had to be one of their keys but home Depot cut mine and just charged me for a similar key they had

Nope. He’s talking about a completely non metallic emergency key. I wouldn’t bother with one unless there is a reason a metal key would cause an issue in your wallet. They are a one or two use item IMO.

Interesting, I've never heard of those. Seems like something to avoid.
