Recently tried to do a tranny flush on my 2015 trd sport. After draining the pan I added to what seemed like enough fluid (castrol multi vehicle atf).

Added until it started to drizzle out of the check plug. I wasn’t able to figure out how to read the temp through the obd so I played it by ear (feeling the pan). I pumped it in with the plug open and once it dripped I thought It was good. Stupid me, should’ve let the fluid itself get to temp. Took it to work the next day about a 40 mile round trip and notice some jerks when coming to stops and a little be of hard shifts but not much.

I knew something wasn’t right so I rewatched the video on how to do the fluid change and noticed where I messed up. I did it the right way by reading the temp with a thermo gun and letting the fluid get warm before release the plug. Turns out i was a quart and a half low that whole time i was driving it. My biggest worry was if i caused any permanent damage to the transmission or tourqe converter.

Once I filled it correctly it helped with the hard shifts and stops, but now I hear what almost sounds like a powerstearing pump going out in the tranny area when giving gas after putting into drive and a pop/clunk when coming to a full stop. I drained the castrol and flushed it with mobile 1 full synthetic, but does the same thing.
Don’t really feel like paying for a tranny swap in the future. What do you guys think?

Is the Castrol/Mobil compatible with the Toyota recommended fluid???

Verify the spec for your truck in the Owner's Manual.

FWIW, the thermo gun can have a large error band. Also the "pan temp" may not be the same as the fluid temp at the factory sensing location.

Suggest to verify the fluid with the vehicle specification and to follow the Fill Check procedure to the letter.....no shortcuts or substitutions.

Sorry, I can't guess if the tranny is damaged. Time will tell or you could have it checked at a tranny shop or Toyota.

Something as expensive as a automatic transmission is not where you want to experiment. Do it by the book.

You need to check it in temp check mode. Also, the truck needs to be running while checking.

If you do finally get it to the correct level, and decide to try this again in future. Drain the pan. Then measure exactly what came out. That way, if you can’t get it in Temp Check Mode, at least you’ll have an idea of how much to put back in.

Thinking about taking it to toyota and having them drop the pan and making sure everything’s in one piece. Also flushing it with toyota ws. Should’ve just them take care of all of it to begin with.

I chose to let the dealer do mine as well.
I didn’t want have to fool with it myself.
Still not sure why we couldn’t have just got a dip stick. It surely couldn’t have made the price too much more to add one. I would have gladly paid the extra cost for one.

As long as the truck is running , you can leave the overflow bolt out of the pan as you are adding fluid . When the fluid begins draining out the overflow , you know you are full . Then make the level adjustment by reading the temp of the fluid thats dribbling out .
    One huge NO NO
You didnt remove the pan to clean the filter and the magnets . How do you know the pan is clean before changing the fluid ?
By introducing fresh fluid with super detergents into a dirty pan and filter , you risk washing the crap laying in the pan into the valve body .
Throw a bottle of Lubeguard platinum at the transmission and double check your fluid level
    ALWAYS remove the pan !!!

Don't flush it. Bring it to an independent transmission shop.

The one simple thing people can do to guarantee success on a Drain & Fill, is simply practice the 2 pin jump and getting there truck in to temp check mode. They should do this first before they do anything. It’s even free, you don’t have to buy anything. If you can’t properly check the fluid level, then you need to realize you can’t complete the job correctly . So many people are so eager to drain the fluid, and yet they really can’t comprehend the instructions in post #1 and then end up back here with all sorts of questions that are all in post #1 to began with.
