UPDATE

• The detailed packing list is helpful....do a 1x/year thorough update of supplies then just fill in gaps over summer (not big winter users here).
• The dometic fridge has been a game changer. We did need to get solar to make this viable when we are out backpacking, will test this out this summer. When we get home, unloading camper is super fast. 40L is perfect for two people for 3-8 days out.
• We have the front runner 5 gallon water containers with the metal spigots. The containers are fine but the spigots suck. They drip and do not provide clean drip. For the $, would not recommend.
• The box/water jugs makes it very efficient to load up the camper, definitely recommend.
• This is our 3rd summer with a vagabond drifter and we still love it. Have gone so many places we would not have otherwise been. Totally game changer.

This is the thread I've been looking for! I have decided to start getting out more and explore this beautiful country. I wanted a 'home on wheels' that would allow me to get off the beaten path while providing more comfort/security than my ground tent currently does.

I put a deposit down on an AT Summit after reading the comparison shootout on Expedition Portal. Also, Tacomaworld has been a VALUABLE resource. This thread has made me think about things I hadn't yet such as how to reserve spots when your tent is part of your vehicle and how to organize your gear.

So why is there ZERO talk about Summits? Surely, there's others who like the design, proven quality, and respectable build times(I was quoted 28 weeks)? Anyways, not hating on the other wedges as I seriously considered both the Vagabond and the Canopy Camper. I just didn't want to wait so long and the Alu-Cab just seemed a little 'big' to me.

Questions to all wedge owners: What do you consider an essential option to get? I placed an order for the 'base' Summit, but have a little time to make changes before there's charges. I enjoy camping more when it's cool than warm so I'm thinking about a heater or at least a thermal blanket for the tent. I want to keep weight down so no cabinets for me. Also, i want to keep the roof bare. Will a front sliding-window in combination with the tent windows provide enough airflow when it does get warmer? Thanks!

 

I have ordered a Summit, and I've also been surprised at the lack of discussion about those campers. But based on posts on the AT Overland FB page, it appears they're shipping a lot of campers. Who knows?

I added several things to my order, which really jacked up the price. I think a fan on the top is the most essential option.

I can't wait to get my camper in December!

 

I think the Summit is an excellent choice. I was considering it but went with Super Pacific because I like the design a bit better. I think you will be happy with it. I’m retiring and looking to travel more and not to RV parks! I also hate setting up camp and taking it down so when I discovered wedge caps i was sold!! I plan on keeping it simple. Fridge and folding chairs. Room for mtn bikes and still want to have the bed available.

Also, I live in California, so security is a big issue. I opted for no windows. If you can get a rear brake light w/ a camera, that's nice to have. I have a swing out so I can either relocate my camera to my bumper or up top on the brakelight. AT should be able to help you there with that.

Front sliding window probably isn't worth a damn if there's no screen on there. Most people just open the back window, hang a bug net, and turn on the fan on the roof.

It's probably more efficient and convenient to run an electric blanket. There're plenty on the market you can put on top of the sleeping pad between your back and the mattress. Definitely opt for the -20°F bags if you camp in the cold. My -12°F Trip along 395 was fantastic with the -20°F bag, a hot water bottle, and an electric blanket.

The not so great thing about the summit is that its roof is low slung so you get real concerns with your feet touching the roof when you're sleeping if you're tall. There's also less storage up top for bedding than say a comparable Vagabond. For some it's a bit more compact too since the Vagabond is far forward. The Atlas is pretty comparable instead for the Drifter.

Super Pacific is nice, but it doesn't have much in the way of insulation. It's great if you're camping in warm weather climates. But I plan on hitting up Alaska on the way to Prudhoe bay. The Atlas w/ an insulation package should be a much better option in the long run imo.

 

Interested in a Habitat today instead? You could always resell it when the Vagabond becomes available.
