6MT throwout bearing and clutch system shenanigans

I had the idea to get rid of the plastic pedal and was digging around to see what could be adapted. I got lucky when I was searching on all applications that used the same pivot collar sleeve thingy.



The FJ being the only vehicle of that group (besides Tacoma) that came with a MTM led me to dig deeper there.



It sure looked similar to the Tacoma pedal in the pic. So, I ordered one up for comparison. Once I had both pedals in hand I knew it'd be an easy swap. I did bounce a couple of the part numbers off of TW and got a couple hits. So, I certainly wasn't the first to think of this. I'm sure your post on the subject was in there too. One guy that did the swap used a master cylinder from an overseas application to obtain the clevis. I thought I'd try to find something easier to get paws on and came up with the one I ended up using.

My FJ pedal required zero modifications. It went right in like it was meant for the Tacoma. I'm surprised to hear that yours needed so much adapting. Still have the part number you bought? Should be a 31301-35270.
I did need to extend the contact pad at the base to contact the interlock switch. But, that was because I incorporated an adjustable pedal stop bolt that keeps The Tilton unit happy. I just used a fatter cushion there.

As for the pilot; I've given it a bit of thought. But, imo, effort to benefit ratio is abysmal. I really don't think it'd significantly change anything. The input bearings are plenty beefy to keep that shaft in line.

 

@BillDaCat8 I have the RC62F TO bearing. It measures 66mm OD and 58mm where it will ride on the fingers. Will it work the the Clutch master PP? Or do you have the diameter of the PP fingers where the bearing is going to ride? Do you or anyone in this thread Know if the 3rd gen clutch will work on the 2nd gen flywheel?

 

As luck would have it, I just happen to have what it would take to solve this puzzle. Remind me in the morning to check.

 

What are the odds that one of the Tilton units will work with the Clutch Masters hydro bearing mount? Or would this thought be a waste of time?

 

You wouldn’t need to use any part of the cm unit. The Tilton sleeve fits just fine. Just rotate the threaded sleeve until the gap is where you want it.

 

Is there a item list for this Tilton setup you came up with? I’m not installing this CM crap

I realize that it’s old hat at this point. But, for anyone following... The 3rd gen Pressure plate bolts right up to the 2nd gen flywheel.

 

Great work @BillDaCat8. You're quite resourceful! So you currently have an RC62F 3rd gen transmission, FJ cruiser clutch pedal + CMC, and an adapted Tilton 6000 series hydraulic release bearing correct? I've read all 10 pages of this thread but I just want to make sure that I'm following you correctly.

If one wasn't about to swap in a RC62F 3rd gen trans, could that same Tilton bearing be adapted to the RA60F in the 2nd gen? I'm a machinist by trade but I'm no automotive specialist. And if not, where would you suggest letting Tilton know that they should develop a kit for us 2nd gens? Do you have a contact in mind? I wouldn't mind gathering interest for a group buy in order to convince them.

 

Yep. That’s my setup. The CMC is just the later Tacoma part tho. I believe it’s the 2012+ part. I installed it along with a handful of other parts that a “squeaky clutch pedal” TSB called for a couple years ago.

Yeah, the same release setup should work just fine with the RA trans. I’m pretty sure that the no-spin pin holder would be different (but similar) though. Being a machinist; I’m sure that you’d make short work of that.

The most difficult part of the whole thing was just finding and then adapting a proper bearing to work with the OE pressure plate.

If you guys wanna beat Tilton up to build a kit, be my guest. I suggested the idea numerous times to the guy I was dealing with. Got zero response on the idea. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to post up his email here. PM me and I’ll share tho.

 

Thanks for the reply. Time constraints these days make me far more inclined to just purchase a kit readily available to drop in and go. Since Clutch Masters has proven to be a bust, DIY might be the only way though. Or... maybe, just maybe, tales of Clutch Master heart ache will inspire them to want a monoply over the RA60F hydro bearing market....? Far fetched, but worth a shot! Haha.

I'll try my hand at both sales and technical departments to see if I get any bites via email. Might get someone more interested than your contact. I shall report back.

 

Is this .060" step applicable regardless of the clutch being used ?

I'm going to resurface a previously used URD heavy flywheel that I plan to install when I get my Tilton Bearing act together. I'm measuring the current step on it at .055". Should I stick with this number, or request .060" when I get it resurfaced ?

It all pretty much works with off the shelf bits. I’ve provided the numbers for the items needed at the beginning of this thread. Kirk was in fact the Tilton employee that I was working with. So, he knows what all I bought. @garciav @Kasbien

That being said, now is the time to start hounding Tilton. The seed has been planted. The more contacts and interest they get from us, the more likely they’ll seriously consider doing up a kit.

 

Honestly, I’d ask Gadget. I don’t know for sure if his clutch needs something different.

 

I plan on using your part numbers for the FJ pedal setup, but isn't the hyrdo bearing setup going to be different on the 2G tranny than the 3G?

I will reply back to Kirk and see if more interest could potentially shorten the timelime.

 

A little more traction to report! Excited to see what June 8th brings. I also remarked that a 3rd Gen kit could also have it's own set of interest if it's not to a whole seperate beast for them to design a second time.

 

I have a RA61F in the garage. I should be able to help get some measurements.

 

It looks like they are next to Paso Robles, CA. I could just drop it off if needed.
