Should I trade in for a TRD PRO?

What's your elevation? The engine loses around 10% of its power every 3000 feet. For example Flagstaff at 7000' would be down 23% in power compared to sea level. Requires a lower gear.

I’m at 5000 but the DA is 8k.
Even coming out of Phoenix or into Cali which is 3000 feet to almost sea level it won’t maintain 70

    Tough question.

In terms of 11k over what you paid for the Ram, what about tax, title, license and other fees related to your original purchase and that of the new truck? Once factored, are you really looking at 11k?

As a first-time midsize truck owner, I can tell you the Tacoma certainly isn’t a full sized truck in any way. I’ve found this both good and not so good.

MT? I grew up on sticks and banged gears on an Eaton 13 speed for six years, but in big city traffic and on the trail, I’ll take the auto.

Highway speeds? Many on this forum load their trucks with lots of gear and add taller, heavier tires. Very cool. Fun for looks and other functional purposes, but fuel economy and highway performance aren’t among them.

Keep it stock and, compared to a full-sized, it’s adequate on the highway. Mod it as typical here, and you better have other purposes for the truck, as highway performance shouldn’t be one of them.

You had me at manual transmission. Love my MT pro and wouldn't be driving a tacoma if I couldn't row my own gears. With crazy prices its going to be tougher to get especially a pro at a decent price. Where I live they mark up Pros 10k even without shortages. Takes a little extra digging to find a pro in manual too because they probably hover in the 250 +/- a year made in that trim and configuration.

Are we comparing Houston to Hawaii traffic? Big difference.

Welcome! I have the 21 Manual TRD Pro Lunar Rock and I have had an '04 Manual and personally both don't do well in traffic, it got tiring driving in traffic, shifting and pushing in the clutch constantly, sounds kind of funny and maybe I'm being picky, but drive in stop and go traffic for a couple hours and you will see what I'm talking about. Now I live in the boonies and I just drive mine off-road mostly and its perfect for that, but if you want to go fast down the freeway and you want to be comfortable in traffic you might want to look at something else. Unless you really want to go mostly off-roading and just tough it out for when you have to commute, its up to you. I got the manual because I like to drive my truck and not have the truck drive me. My '04 was a base model and the TRD Pro is worth it IMO, when I'm driving around I feel as tall as full size trucks with the extra lift the TRD Pro provides but in a smaller truck. I was looking at the OR's as well but I remembered when I got my '04 I skimped out and did not get the 4 door or the TRD package and I always regretted it and also I would still have the '04 if I had gotten the 4 door. I only got rid of it because I could not fit the family in it and I could not afford 2 car payments at the time.

As for the waiting for the '22 or getting a '21 keep in mind it might be quite some time to get either one. I had to order mine and it took 6 months to finally get it, it was totally worth it to me as I love to get out and see nature and this truck can and will get you there.

I own both a hemi 5.7 Ram and a manual Tacoma and I like driving both. I don't feel underpowered going from one to the other... then again I'm not racing to get where I need to go. For reference my Ram is a 2013 sport 4x4 quad cab 5.7, rear LSD, 3.93, air suspension and extended range fuel tank.

Nice truck. My brother has basically the same truck.
Same rear end and suspension. Don’t think his is the sport thought.
As for under powered, my not until you hook 3,000+ lbs to the back.
There’s definitely a noticeable difference then.

A Chrysler product built in the last 20 years appreciating? Never heard that one before.

Ide probably keep the ram if you consider power, comfort, and cab space at the top of your list.

Definitely this. I came from a Platinum F150 and the comfort, power and cab space is not even close in the Tacoma. But I needed a smaller truck so here I am

I have a 2019 Ram Crew Cab 4X4 with the Hemi, 8 speed auto and 3.92 gearing. The thing feels like it wants to tear right out from underneath you. It's great when you need a big fat vehicle with lots of room for people and stuff or if you need to tow something. My tacoma is better for daily driving, fitting down trails, fitting into parking spaces or any place where actual offroad capabulity is required. Also when I want to show people how cool I am (it's a manual). My advice is to keep your Ram and get the Tacoma. I have both and it's pretty awesome. It's only money right?

Ordered a loaded DCSB Off Road manual 3 months ago and drove it home last week. I didn’t even consider the automatic. It’s a good thing I do love mine being a manual as I didn’t even drive one prior to paying for it.

o_OTransmission is clunky as poo? My god... Please don’t spread misinformation.

You need to work on your footwork. When I drive it’s smooth as butter unless I screw up.

These transmissions are super smooth, just gotta know how to drive it.

Also, my MT is quicker than my buddies 19 AT OR, especially in the city. Same tires and rims. Not sure what’s happening with your truck, user error?

Really? I never had to do that even on the stock tune. I’ve always used 6th in city driving as well, like 35-40 mph. Are you on the latest TSB ECU calibration?

If you can sell it for $11k more (as in take the cash and walk) do it.

If you can trade it for $11k more, you're not getting your $11k, because you will overpay for the purchase vehicle.

So if you can find a modest gas sipping daily from a private owner, then sell the RAM to Carvana, CarMax, et al, have at it.

Buying a clean eco box right now is a great idea. When gas keeps going higher, people will be wondering why they bought a truck when a sedan would do. You could make another great deal.

Thank you. 3,000 pounds not too bad on the manual Tacoma. Understandably, yes the Ram will tow it easier as this configuration is able to pull about 10,000 pounds. Also has a longer wheel base more weight for a planted feel. Owning both I will say this. If I am going to tow north of or at about 5,000 I'm brining the Ram. Less than that what ever is convenient for me. With the Rams air suspension it will level the trailer (very useful) it also has integrated brake control.

Well.. I was foolish to think I could find a MT TRD Pro for anywhere near MSRP... Got quotes for anywhere from 2k to 10k over.

However, there are som MT ORs in nearby states with the right options. Looks like time general going rate for Tacomas is MSRP.

I really appreciate y’all’s wide range of thoughts and opinions. I plan to test drive an AT OR in town to see if I like it and if so, will probably proceed with an MT purchase for the right trade in value. No nearby MT so if I buy it site unseen, that will be a little leap of faith lol
