It is my neighbors truck and I am just helping him out.

I am used to full size trucks, so to me all Tacoma beds look short but I will double check on the SB vs LB question.

We are both in our 60s so we are not going to be lifting 8D batteries. I routinely deal with 27s inside of vans, but if we have to mount them underneath it is going to be size 24s.

The project also needs more current than can be extracted from a single 8D battery.

It is still just an initial conversation. If it goes forward it will allow him to use the truck to power both camping needs and a back up for his home refrigerator during the fall fire season outages - same as my van.

In theory there isn't a limit on how long something like this can power a typical camper refrigerator - that part only requires having 300+ watts of solar. His truck has some kind of fold up cover on top of the bed so in order to make this work we would replace that with solar panels.

Just a basic 48 volt battery pack / 2 kW inverter / solar setup like I do in conversion vans.

That is one thing I like about the OR that I don't have with the Sport, the option for 2nd battery placement on the passenger side.

Location? I still have a Pallet Jack, free to a good home!

With enough batteries, you could power just about anything!

    Looks like fun.

I am not sure yet about what trade offs he is willing to make regarding power / weight capacity / etc.

I am in Livermore, CA - east bay portion of the San Jose / San Francisco area.

I was watching an on line video about a Tacoma total frame replacement.

Once I got past the shock of the need for this to happen, I saw another possible location.

On the side frame rails, just forward of the differential, it looks like there might be room for 2 modest size batteries on each side.

If it works out, that location would move the battery mass pretty low as well as forward so the rear axle is not carrying the entire load.

Obviously I am new to Tacoma s but I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on this rail mount idea?

Get an aftermarket rear bumper. Move the spare to the bumper. Should be enough room in the space vacated by the spare to build a tray.

I agree. Would be nice to find something existing for the tray.

Neighbor has been out of town, so just saw the truck in his driveway last night.

Looks like a short bed based on how close the rear wheel is to the second row door.

    TR... something. 4x 4 with 4 doors.

Has that wimpy 400 watt outlet in the bed. No idea what 400 watts is good for except maybe a light bulb.
