Are used power steering pumps a thing?

Recently my 2008 taco has been having a minor clicking sound and feel in the wheel when I turn to the left. I took it into my local taco guy and he said I need a new PS pump. I asked if he could get a used one and install it instead of a brand new one to save money, and he said that’s not a good idea and can’t be done by him. Which is confusing to me, because he put a used diff in my taco not too long ago when my diff went bad.

Is anyone familiar with this topic or has anyone done a used PS swap before?

Your taco guy doesn’t want to be liable when a used ps pump fails 3 mo. later.
    - Or -
Your taco guy doesn’t really want to work with you because he knows getting you to pay normal fees for normal jobs is not worth the effort. He’s done with you because your cheap.
You trying to save money means he’s losing money.

    I’d say it’s a combination of both.

My guess is that the one you put in from a junk yard is probably in about the same shape yours is. Most shops warranty their work for a year and putting in something of unknown quality could mean that he would have to spend the labor to do it again. I wouldn't do it if I were the mechanic. Now a rebuilt one might give you a few years less than a genuine OEM one so you'll have to decide how long you intend to keep the truck.

Thanks, that helps. As I stated in the original question, I was confused because of how my mechanic said yes to a used diff but no to a used PS pump. My truck also has 215k miles and I plan on selling it in the next year for a newer taco so I’m a little hesitant to drop a grand into it when I’m going to sell it soon and it otherwise runs perfectly.

Buy the part and see if he'll install it.

Rockauto wont ship to most Colorado addresses. They have a battle with the city tax laws and just wont ship to most of us. If you have an address that it outside of city limits then you are usually good to go.

    How about Amazon?
    They are becoming quite competitive.
    Maybe try there?

    As for a used PS.
No, I wouldn’t want one. Nor would I want to install one.
I mean, if it’s an emergency or all you can afford. Maybe.
    But I’m not quarantine anything.

Had mine changed for a used one. Works great, done ~40k km ago.

You know the history of these particular used parts where you are driving them everyday. And off the shelf used part, no idea. Especially if it's off the shelf and you aren't going to go get it yourself off the donor vehicle.
