I’ve been looking into this and other than the kits (like AFE) that suck air from directly above the hot rad, there’s nothing available.
I was looking under my hood and figure there’s prob enough room to modify the plastic shield beside the rad and run a 4”ID tube from the front grill to the air box, DIY-style. The only problem is that it would have to be easily removable in order to have access to the power steering reservoir.

The locating of the stock intake is optimized as it is. Very high up in the wheel well, behind a fender-liner, with a splash guard, sucking cold air, with the least chance of a bow wave getting ingested in a water crossing. Why on earth would you want it in the front of the truck or up on the hood? That’s hydro-lock city. You’d be surprised at the water crossings people do in a stock Tacoma. Water will come over the hood, and through the grille, and the truck makes it. The area above the front wheel is often in the trough behind the bow wave and the last place to be inundated.

If you remove the fender liner, then yes you gotta do something. And yes a schnorkle is better than stock, but stock isn’t where it is by random choice. Toyota thought about it, which is why it’s in the same location on all of their non-snorkelled trucks.

Deep water crossing with the air intake in the grill or hood scoop? Never. That would be so obviously stupid.

For me, or anyone that does everything or anything other than deep water crossing, I just don’t think the location of the stock intake is optimal for grabbing cold, fresh air. That’s why I’m considering a grill intake.
