So I'm thinking of adding a winch to the truck, and as a temporary solution using a hidden winch mount so I'm not in the hole for new bumper cost right away.

Do any of your run anything like that minus the bumper? I see CBI makes a hidden mount.

When the borders open I wanted to get my hands on an apex from fright Harbour.

Ahh you are talking aboooot a hidden winch mount, not receiver.

If you can do the temp option of the hidden winch why not. I know @Shveet amd @llamasmurf ran/run them.

Another option is looking into coastal off-road which is a Canadien company. Many have done there DIY kits.

yeah i have a "hidden winch" mount, granted it's the SSO Slimline hybrid. bumper is a heavy pig at 75lbs (then add the weight of a winch on top of that...), but has a 3/8" mounting plates that bolt up to the frame.
CBI hidden one is the same weight but not sure what the mounts are like. HOWEVER you can unbolt the winch and slide that sucker out for winter storage or day to day, at least that is what @Snail81 told me with about the CBI Adventure bumper which both are built on the same platform.

@daks and @pete37 both have the Warn lo-profile bumpers, don't recall if that is winch compatable.

but that's all bumpers, which the list goes on for as long as there are many dicks in the world.

but there is this which iirc @Norilsk had for about a day then tossed it to @tacoma16 which then got tossed... somewhere.

(apparently there is a link ban from relation race wheels about their true hidden winch mount. but google "relation race wheel hidden winch mount")
but that's as "hidden" as you get. you also need to understand you're deleting your crash bar to mount that winch.

To anyone who has mounted a plus size spare in the factory spot, does this look right/safe?

Would avoid that hidden winch mount. It seemed awfully flimsy (in my opinion) and the welds were pretty bad. Like I’m all for bigger the glob better the job but these were not good. Cold, not touching both pieces of steel. Was rough.

from what images i've seen/ threads about oversized tires in the stock mounting location, that goes look "correct" with the tire being that close to the exhaust. But i'm not sure how much i trust it over longer time spans.

overall, i would put some sheet metal as another shield or thermal wrap the pipe...

Give the spare a few kicks to see if it'll shift. If the air gap with the exhaust heat shield can be maintained, you're OK.

Some people drill two holes in the X-brace and relocate the spare tire hoist one bolt pitch rearward: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...to-new-adventures.528480/page-5#post-17311994

I may do this when my 5th wheel gets in. Figure a 255/80-17 will be less drastic of a "compact spare" than the stock 265/70-16 currently under my bed.

Just got one of the bulldog hidden mounts from a Canadian retailer. Haven't put it in yet so can't say much for fitment but looks reasonably engineered and all 3/16" construction. On the bathroom scale only 32lbs. From initial inspection the only thing I feel could have been done better is the fairlead plate that's adjustable only secures with a single bolt on each side. Would have preferred 2 but may not ever be a problem unless doing a very off pitch pull. If it looks suspect after some use, looks easy to reinforce.

hard to tell from the pic but it looks like it only mounts to the studs on the frame horns unless that bend at the bottom has another attachment point. you may want to add additional reinforcement to the frame or hard pulls will bend the mounts.

The bottom has another attachment to the M12 bolts 9n the bottom of the frame. I agree with adding some reinforcement straps further back (ultimate tensile strength of 3x M8 8.8 studs is barely any margin)

I really like the idea of the Maverick, base AWD is 35k and thankfully non-CVT. I think it will take a small chunk out of the SUV market.

Just need to see one in person to confirm if its as cool as I think it is.
