I haven't actually replaced my O2 sensors, but I have removed the manifolds a couple of times, and can confirm both that the sensors are very difficult to reach in place, but very easy to access when the manifolds are sitting on your workbench.

The FSM actually doesn't call for removing the exhaust -- instead it looks like they specify a specialty tool. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the graphic:

Looking at the picture, it looks like what you actually need is a crow's foot. But if that doesn't help, my honest advice would be to start dropping the exhaust Y pipe and front driveshaft so you can just remove the manifold. Along the way, keep an eye out for a chance to finally get your wrench on that stupid sensor.

Thanks for the quick answers and link to a tool I shall need.

I was hoping for more of a , just take the tire off and bingo your done. Pulling the manifold of a 200K motor without breaking a bolt, what are my chances.....

Think I shall just take her off the road for a bit, jack it up and take my time. Lucky I have other transportation, and I retire at the end of next month, so I should have time.

I just replaced all 4 last week, these will be your friend. Especially the swivel ratchet. It was easiest to remove all 4 from under the truck.

Now that I got, both 3/8 and 1/2, I like the deep socket, where did you get that.

Oh, and I do have PB Blaster, works great, stinks but works great...

I bought the swivel from Matco but I'm sure you could buy something similar from Lowes. I bought the deep socket from Rock Auto for $5. I wish I had gotten the small socket though. This socket wants to spread apart when the O2 is tight.

Finally got around to replacing the upstream drivers side O2 sensor yesterday, along with the mass airflow sensor. Both codes now gone, truck runs like a million bucks again. Sensor came right out, but the cannon plug was a bear to get apart, and worse to get back together...

Knipex parallel pliers, are also very handy in these situations.

Looking into replacing all 4 since I am at 108K. Just thinking preventative maintenance. My exhaust is running rich of late. Any opinions?
