The tip snapped off even though I pulled straight up. There is nothing to grab hold of. Drill more of a hole & try to get it with a pick tool? Or will that most likely push it in?

Pull the intake or maybe try a wood screw to screw into the broken part and pull it out with pliers. Pulling the intake might be easier, just make sure to use new gaskets.

While we’re at it. I did get gaskets since i’d be in this far already. Are you sayin’ it’s not that bad? I haven’t watched a vid on doing it yet.

Try to clean around the injector bases so no dirt falls in,
I see lots of dirt in this area

Try twisting them just a bit to see if that gets them loose going forward

Just make sure you clean the dirt around the manifold before removing it so no dirt enters the engine. I'm not sure but you might lose some coolant.

While you have the intake off, plug the holes in the cylinder head with shop rags or paper towels (the blue ones work pretty good) to help keep dirt, nuts, bolts and other stuff out while you are cleaning the sealing surfaces.

Prolly a little late now. Timmah has a video showing what to do when replacing injectors. You should download and watch it.

Thank you. I did. For some reason this injector just didn’t come out the way the others did. Odd though, cuz the pintle tip came out surprisingly easy. Almost as though it was already broken or at least cracked. I thought it was going to be stuck.

Are you sending them to motor west in California for rebuilding?

I would get a screw a little larger than the hole and screw it in. Then I would pull on the screw to get it out.

I found a local place that does this. Metro diesel in Agawam. Dropped them off yesterday. Thank you....

    Nice!
I had the same thing happen with 3 of the 6 injectors. Pick tool did the trick.

I read in some forums for other vehicles where people just started the engine ran them through. I didn’t want to do that.

I know this thread is old, well, not that old, but...

I started a thread about crap being dumped in the gas tank of my son's 1st gen Prerunner, and what I've been doing to try to get the truck to start. Dropped and cleaned tank, new fuel pump and fuel filter, new gas and still no start. I confirmed the new pump was working, and that I had spark, and assumed I had air, so off to the next step, replacing the fuel injectors, and while I'm there new spark plugs and wires too.

Everything was going great until all 3 injectors on the passenger side were stuck in the intake. I was hoping they'd pull out, still connected to the fuel rail. Trying to get them out I broke two of them off in the intake. That's what lead me to this thread. So, I tried a pick tool, needle nose pliers, and nothing. All I was doing is breaking up the injector more. Then I tried the screw trick. Right as the screw got a few threads in the broken injector, it collapsed the injector, and it fell through the hole... along with a 3" stainless steel screw. No magnet is gonna bail me out of this one.

I tried the hose/tubing connected to a shop vac and had no luck. I might have gotten bits and pieces of the broken injector out, but not the screw. Looks like the intake manifold is coming off... until my neighbor leant me a scope. I could see the screw, with the broken injector still attached, and it was pretty upright. I tried using a claw grabber, which could grab the screw, but it would lose grip trying to get through the hole. With the help of the scope I could get the skewer into the Robertson (square) head of the screw (I just learned it was called Robertson) pretty frequently. So I put a dab of Gorilla Glue's version of crazy glue on the tip, and with the help of the scope I nailed it and stuck it right in the screw hole . It let it set for 15 minutes or so, and was able to extract the screw and broken piece of fuel injector. Now I don't need to remove the intake manifold.

I just thought I'd share here to add another possible solution, as I saw the screw trick here. The screw trick only created more problems for me, but the lessons are: use a steel screw, not stainless steel, and tie a string or dental floss to the screw first, so if it drops in like mine did you can easily retrieve it. And finally, if you are as stupid as me and drop a 3" stainless steel screw into your intake, use a scope and you can probably get it out. Back to wrap up the fuel injector replacement (MotorWest Performance rebuilt OEM Denso injectors - popular on the 4Runner forum), and pray that it starts!

I was surprised that the shop vac couldn't suck it out, but I really didn't want to have to pull the intake manifold, so I was motivated to get that screw out!
