When I press the MAPS button on my 2020 Tacoma's radio, it says I need to install the application and that I need to go to the Toyota website to get more information. Now I got an email from Toyota saying that my Taco is not equipped for maps and that I need to use Apple CarPlay and a third party app (like WAZE) to navigate. What is up with that? Why would I not be equipped for Maps in a new truck?

You have to have the Dynamic Navigation upgrade (included in advance tech package for $2000), plus a yearly fee after first 2 years, to use the built in maps. But yes, alternative is to use apple/android car play along with google or apple maps (its probably better than built in maps anyway).

Most new cars are like this, built in gps/maps isn't free.

Anyone know if you can activate Dynamic Navigation if you didn't buy it from the factory? And not pay the full $2000 tech package price?

My 2017 had navigation. It sucked. Replaced the HU and now use CarPlay which is way better.

Why are you asking US? Ask Toyota. in the meantime...use apple carplay. My 2017 AC has a map pocket behind the passenger seat.

Don't even worry about it. Compared to even Google Maps on the phone, the navigation on the truck blows. At least it does on my 16. The phone apps aren't ever out of date and even tell you when there's a speed trap ahead.

I would just use something else, factory toyota navigation is usually pretty laggy

You do realize that most kids today can’t read a map? Heck, ask them about magnetic declination and their eyes roll back in their head.

Ridges become valleys and valleys are ridges to them when you ask one to point out features on a real topo map as well. What’s that blue line? A trail on the ridge! Hand them a compass to triangulate their position on the map, and watch them flounder

Its not like using Gaia or Topo Maps on a pad, but it is pretty good in the back country when there’s no cell service for navigation. I often use it with my ‘17 OR to find new trails and shortcuts and it does pretty good. One of my favorites was a county road that it led me down in Eastern Oregon that was really just a cow path with lots of boulders and ruts, and it has brought us to some awesome backcountry places CarPlay would be usless for. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...and-reputable-resellers.631080/#post-21649085

I have the advanced tech package on my 2020 and still don't have native maps.
