As a mechanic, I'm sure that you are aware that when you cut rotors/drums during brake jobs you can see the level of warp in the first or second cut. In taking 0.002" each time, you should rule out/in a warping or out of round condition. See if you can find a local shop with a lathe that is willing to help you with your investigation. Good luck. I hope you get to the bottom of your issue.

Does warp have a very specific meaning to brakes?
Any metal that's heated unevenly will "warp".
Definition: a twist or distortion in the shape or form of something.

I just did exactly this. The drums were out of round but it did not resolve the vibrations so I am sure it’s either front rotors or some sort of driveline/chassis vibrations being transmitted throughout the body.

Being as rotors are a simple fix and they won’t do it I’m led to believe they have tried on past cases and it doesn’t fix it. I’ve opened a case with Toyota and will wait it out.

Lateral runout is the exact term when referring to warp.

Because the replacement truck started having the same issue a few weeks after taking delivery but now they’re telling me it’s normal.

I guess my 2012 issues are kind of minimal compared to some 3rd gens i read about on here.

Im not in any way boasting, actually it kind of makes me feel unsettled. Mainly because my plan was to buy one after my 2nd gen retires.

I feel for you guys with these issues, especially when the great feeling of finally buying yourself a new truck, making the payment work, then get shafted by a corporation that its CEOs would buy one of these with “play money”.

Thanks. Helps to know where the frame of reference is haha. Lateral could be either parallel or perpendicular to the axle axis lol.

    More like "lunch money".

I brought mine in at 200 miles for a brake shimmy- the dealership just replaced the rear drums. They claim it's fixed (they still have the truck for now as I had a litany of complaints)

Lots of owners with the same issue, I'm guessing the tooling for the manufacturing of the rear axle assembly in general is worn out so components are sent from factory out of spec

    Any expert help out there.
Just purchased 2019 Tacoma SR5 4x4 four door. Drove it for 2800 mile with not trouble and then brakes started pulsing when trucked slowed below 25 mph. Checking myself thinking front rotors are warped. Can get up to 55mph and pull e brake and vibrates. Dealer ship confirmed recall for warped axels. They installed three axels before they got good ones. Drove for about 60 miles started again. This time dealer turned drums. Drove about 60 miles and started again. Have appointment this week to repair again. This time they are wanting to compare to other trucks on lot. See some of you gents were able to get a new truck. Is there any legal info you gents run into during your replacement. This is third time for dealer ship to try to repair. I have researched the Lemon Law. Looks time consuming but that looks like where I am headed. Really let down on new Tacomas. All info on the net looks like Toyota has had this since 2015. Thanks for any help.

Yes, I have a 19 Tacoma with roughly 9,000 miles and also fed the same vibration. I don’t feel it extremely strong yet, but do notice it just before coming to a stop. I’m glad I bought a warranty, because if this is a common problem, I will not be paying for the repair.

Just for giggles. Throw some weight in the box. About 400-500 pounds. Drive around with that in the box. See if you vibs stop. I had this issue also. It blew me away when I had weight in the box. No vibration

    Thanks for info.
I have been reading about drive line angle. Do you think the weight is enough to have this effect. Found on site recommending changing to a one piece drive shaft due to hanger bearing causing angle issue on newer Tacoma. Will give the weight idea a try. Thanks

I have a 2017 off road Tacoma, they replaced the entire abs brake module at 23k miles, under warranty, along with a bunch of other unrelated stuff. The issue went away but it has returned at 43k miles. Seems to be when I go thru really dusty areas in my truck.

2019 Tacoma here and in the first week of ownership it had a mild version of this exact issue, but I just hoped/assumed that a break-in period would fix it. I soon installed probably 400lbs worth of bed accessories (tonneau cover, bed mat, bed rack, RTT) and never noticed the issue again. In hindsight maybe it was the extra weight.

Flash forward 50k miles and 2 years and the problem returned with a vengeance. When breaking, my front end would shake like a beast, so I replaced the front pads/rotors (mechanic said there were some bad hot spots). It helped but then I could feel what felt like pulsing coming from the rear... not as bad as the front but still a worrying amount. Have an appointment next week for a non-dealer mechanic to look at it and will see what they say.

Ended up taking it to the dealer after all. Just picked it up and they said the front rotors are warped slightly (odd, since the rotors and pads are only 500 mostly-highway miles old) and that the rear axles need to be replaced. While my VIN is NOT covered by the TSB (even though my year/model is for other VINs) fortunately the work IS covered by my power train warranty. They did not think that the discs were warped. Shrug.

Well, 5 weeks later I finally got the axle replaced and it seems, for now, to drive just fine. But there was a 2 week wait for the first appointment (I get it, they're busy, that's fine), then they had to order some parts (+3 days) and then wait for the next available appointment (+2 weeks) and then they actually ordered the wrong parts and had to re-order (+3 days), then wait for the next appointment (+2 days this time, fortunately).

    2 weeks + 3 days + 2 weeks + 3 days + 2 days = 35 days from first phone call to resolved problem.

They only replaced the axles and some drum gaskets, so hopefully I don't also have out-of-round drums like so many others have reported.
