24 hrs after purchase A/C died

So yeah - bought a 2006 Tacoma SR5 V6 with 169,000 miles on it.New factory frame - no body rust but some under the hood,front shocks and control arms.24 hours after driving and owning it i stopped by a friends place and the dog was in the car so i left it idling with the dog in it and the a/c on.10 minutes later heard the squeal.Got in the truck,blinking a/c light,smell of burnt rubber.FML!Got under the truck - pulley still spinning - clutch not moving after a few times of on off on off.Nothing.Got on the forum - found the fried clutch postings.Ordered a $20 clutch after reading extensively the symptoms and catastrophic fail of the A/C dieing.My $20 clutch from Amazon arrived in 2 days.I went to put the vicegrip on the clutch and it was disintegrating from rust - had the balled up burnt rubber like many posters mentioned.Got it off with some pb blaster and patience.Installed the new one with the 3 shims,same size as the old ones - cranked her over and turned on the A/C and man back to ice cold air.This saves me from the stealership ripoff that usually can be in the thousands.THANK YOU TACOMA WORLD MEMBERS!!!!!

Excellent and thanks for the post. I have an '06 with 141K on the odo so I will keep this in mind if and when my AC goes south on me.

 

Nice job… clutches are known to go after awhile on these… my son has the same tool kit you have in your picture he got it from his late pop and he uses it a lot when we work on lawn mowers oh and welcome!! I also would like that beer

Husky tool set - i like the husky kits - seem better than craftsman in quality and lifetime warranty as well.I have broken craftsman ratchets and their replacements.Not what it used to be!

 

Awesome job and repair. One question I've always had about the AC clutch replacements is there a reputable brand to purchase? It seems like they're all just unknown chinese brands via Ebay or Amazon which makes me feel a little questionable on the quality.

Craftsman is only a brand name. It is not owned by Sears. Craftsman was bought by Stanley, who holds DeWalt, Porter Cable along with several others.

The big players in the tool world are Techtronic Industries (Milwaukee, Ridgid, Ryobi, Hoover, Empire, Starret, Hart, Oreck + others) and Stanley (DeWalt, Craftsman, Porter Cable, Black & Decker + others). There are other players, but these are the big 2.

Husky (Home Depot) and Kobalt (Lowes) are store brands.

Just about every tool is made in China or VietNam. Many are moving production from China to VietNam. Tariffs are the drivers impacting profit margins.

We were talking in the driveway next to the truck -The dog was honking the horn barking "it's beer thirty!" Then the a/c squealed,smoked and died.Boy was she pissed!
