I just came back from the dealer... empty handed.

    The short version is this:
I saw a white 2WD TRD Sport with a sticker of 37,600 and thought 'Holy cow! I might be going home in a Tacoma today.'
I had my heart set on the magnetic grey, and the dealer web site said they had 13 Tacomas. They had 3. The white one wasn't bad looking either.
I test drove it, street and hwy. I expected a bit more zip from the 3.5 v6, but it was still good.
My heart was beating faster and I kept telling my wife to remind me to think with my head and not my heart.
Then we sat down to talk payments and such and that's when it all changed.
Dealer: 'Yes, it's $37,6 but you didn't see the little box on the sticker where we've added clear door guards. That's $900. And tinted the rear window. Another $900. And the GPS locator... And of course our dealer mark up of two thousand five hundred dollars... but we have the cheapest markup anywhere in this time zone.' Is that supposed to make me okay with it? Because it didn't.

in the end the price was $41,900 and some change. I thanked them, we shook hands and I left.
Maybe they'll call me back with a better deal. Maybe they won't. Either way, I'm in no hurry, especially to pay a made up twenty five hundred bill.

I hope you all have a better experience.

I would keep clear of buying any new truck right now. If you are in no hurry to buy, there is absolutely no reason to overspend fo the sake of overspending.

I'm holding off getting a new 4Runner for the wife until shit settles down.

Props on walking away, someone else won't and will be spending $42k+ on a 2WD Sport.

Yup, tax added onto that and you're looking at around $45k OTD. Hard pass.

I’m so glad in Canada it’s illegal to have dealer markup. However nobody is walking out the door with a penny under MSRP right now unless they’re buying a Chrysler product.

    Crazy times for vehicles

Yes. I didn't play hard ball because I knew I'd never get him down to the price I wanted.
I got him to wave the cost on the window tint and door edge protectors. The GPS locator; I said i could do the same thing with an Apple Airtag for 25 bucks, so pull that out.
But I didn't lock horns with him on the markup.

I worry prices may never come down again - that dealers will permanently continue their price fixing scam on region wide scales, at least until another economic recession hits. Imagine paying $44,083 plus tax for a bare bones SR - that what California dealers are doing.

Im confused why people are saying dealers are scamming people. Do you not understand how supply and demand work?

    Nope. Wish I did.

We have enough paid off, great running cars in our quiver right now that we are not in any hurry. Five being Toyotas.

Before the chip shortage delay, I had a minimum share price on some stock I planned to sell to buy said 4Runner with. Got within a two bucks/share of the sell point and then dropped back down $20+ per share.

    4 run, 2 don't
Vehicles are fetching a premium believe it or not.

We are 1 of 2 dealers in the nation not putting mark ups on our Ram TRX.

    But guess what?

People are still paying a mark up of over $10k or more on one. $5k alone on a Scatpack too.

As someone mentioned, supply and demand.

You can't get picky when inventory is extremely limited.

I really dislike any dealer that does not post what the Added Accessories are. I went to the Roseville Toyota website and found the Tacoma.
Nowhere does it say what they added. Unless I missed it somehow.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Good for you man. You gotta know when to fold them and walk away and this was it. And the GPS trackers they throw on there poorly splice into a factory harness and cause issues down the road so tell them to shove it up a small dark place.

    I saw a SR SX, 2.7 4WD listed for $37,000.

30,000 is too much for that truck.

Yep, things will, sooner or later, return to normal. Maybe a new normal, but when normal does happen, there's going to be quite a few people upside down in their car loans.
