Looking for a low mileage automatic transmission for a 2005 Tacoma PreRunner TRD Double Cab 2WD, 4.0-L V-6, 5AT transmission with 214,000 miles. Mine is starting to show problems. Bought used 6 months ago, looks like transmission fluid has never been serviced or maybe done once in its life time. Flushed and filled today, driving much better. Has a “rumble” feeling at about 40 MPH for a couple of seconds.
Drove vehicle after transmission serviced connected to one of those multi-thousand dollar scan tools on a test drive to confirm issue. Shifting delay between 3 and 4 gear, to me it’s barely noticeable but figure it will only get worse overtime and I need this truck be a daily driver. Shop I’m working with feels that a good used low mileage transmission that has never been repaired (cracked opened) would serve best. They haven’t had much luck with remanufactured Toyota transmissions. And rebuilding this one may not last or be as reliable. I live in Texas looking for a good reliable vendor and guidance on where I can find a transmission. I see these eBay for $1000 or less but unsure of reliability and truthfulness of descriptions.

Appreciate any time and guidance in this endeavor.

    Merry Christmas,

    Kevin

Here's my 2 cents. If you read enough threads here, 2nd Gen Automatics give the "rumble" feel. It's not unusual. My 2015 with 64K miles exhibits this just a bit at 40 mph in 5th gear. I downshift to 4th gear when this happens and things tighten up. Again, many here report this. Before you dump a bunch of $$$ on another transmission, consider this.
I would do another drain and fill - maybe a few more - and be sure to change the filter. Ignore those who says it's a metal screen that can be washed out. I'd like for people who believe that to tell me how you can see ALL the way thru the filter to be sure all of the crud was washed out. You can't. Change it and while the pan is off, clean it and the magnets. Use a new pan gasket.
In my opinion, the 5th gear on the A750E(2WD) and A750F(4WD) automatic transmission is geared "especially" for hwy driving. 40 mph ain't hwy driving.

Thanks Lester Lugnut. I did have transmission filter replaced and had rear differential serviced to, just in case. On the flush and refill, since this is $200 a pop. Would a couple of months in between be ok? I’m not setup to do it myself yet easily yet.

I'd try a few other things and see what happens before I drop all kinda money on a new (used) AT to fix a problem that may or may not exist.

The first thing to do would be to check the fluid level. Easy to do at home, just need a few simple tools and a piece of wire. There are a few threads on here with detailed instructions. Getting the timing right can be slightly tricky.
Search for the thread "how to drain/refill automatic transmission"

I would also try a few more drain and fills over the course of the next 10 or 20k miles. Maybe every 5k with an oil change.

You might try searching on car-part.com. There are probably a few wrecking yards near you with used trannys and less than 100k miles. Being 2wd you're at an advantage as you can find one in the 500-700 range pretty easily

    ToxicTwin,

I've had to taking my time with this. Some family medical issues have reprioritized my efforts. Doing fluid and filter changes for now until I can dive into it. Sorry for not responding earlier, my focus has been elsewhere.
