@spach, I use my cross bars for snowboarding racks. During a non-covid year, I usually have 3-4 people in the truck with all of our snowboards and gear. I had the OEM roof racks on my old truck along with the OEM Toyota tonneau cover. I swapped from mounting my snowboard racks to the OEM roof rack to the KB Voodoo cross bars. The KB Voodoo Cross bars work great with the OEM cover. The BAKFlip install was kind of a pain since you have to remove the bed rails.

    Cross Bars

Pros - Easy access to snowboards, no longer have to worry about clearance issues in parking garages. Can add a RTT if I want.

Cons - Have to remove the bars for full access to the bed (takes less than 2 minutes).

    Old Set Up

Pros - Easy removal of the snowboard racks

Cons - Wind noise, binding straps hitting against the roof, clearance issues with garages

Thanks for sharing this I’m actually trying to do this set up too. I have an rci bed rack but I like the idea of my things being hidden when traveling. Will post pics when done!

    Update:

A random benefit of the tonneau cover / cross bar set up. It’s more difficult to break into with cross bars on (especially if you are backed in against a wall).

I was dumb and left a pair of shoes on the floor behind the drivers seat (I pay to park in a “secure” garage). Someone broke the driver side rear window and stole the pair of shoes.

The night before I went up snowboarding and left a couple of boards along with some gear under the tonneau cover. The cover did exactly what it’s supposed to do and prevented an easy grab and run situation. Granted, I no longer leave anything in my truck when it’s parked. It’s nice to have for transporting my gear from a to b.

Long story short, the tonneau cover prevented a bad day from becoming worse.

Wonder what is the structure in the side panels-is it strong enough for all these potential rack loads like RTT etc.?

The standard rails are relocated 3" lower with metal brackets. No RTT for now. Main reason these are in place in long haul kayak trips with 2 kayaks and a mtn bike while still having the truck bed free and lockable.

Are you referring to the bed side panels? If so, there are countless threads dedicated to bed stiffening. Personally, I feel like the cross bars serve as bed stiffeners themselves. I also added bed stiffeners because they are cheap enough insurance. No problems yet. Also, as it has been noted by everyone under the sun...they do add extra tie down points that come in handy.

This has been a super helpful thread. Just finished the KB Voodoo cross bars install. Did anyone figure out a way to better seal the gaps it creates with the bed and bakflip cover? Normal weather stripping would just peel off..

Glad this has been a help to you! Welcome to the forum.

I never did anything with it because water prevention wasn't really part of the plan with the cover, but I think something like this would do the trick.

I got weather stripping from Lowes but ultimately never added it. The water coming in was so minimal its not an issue and would just be a little much I thought.

I have the same voodoo rack with a smittybuilt rtt. I bought them together, used. I really want better access to the bed but I have the tri-fold tonneau cover, so I can't open it. I have been hunting for a solution to this problem for a while. I want to keep the cover but raise the rtt higher so I can open the cover. Does anyone know of a rack that allows for the hard cover? Has anyone fabricated some mounts to use with a bed rack? TIA

Thinking about going this route too. Already have my BAK x4s revolver. This may just be because im an engineer and tend to overcomplicate situations but. Wouldn't the easiest solution be to take an exactoknife and cut a small cut in the weather strip on both sides of each bracket? this would relive what I am going to refer to as the tension in the weather strip allowing the cut section to sit flush on top of the bracket and then immediately sit flush of the bed cap as well???

That would definitely help close the gap, but wouldn't eliminate leaks. Just like a roof shingle, if you don't lap the seam it will leak. Closed cell foam is leak proof.
