After getting stuck one too many times, I sold my 2005 Pre-Runner and began my search for a Double Cab TRD Off-Road. I found my truck in a sketchy dealer and almost crashed with the salesman on the test drive (sorry dude!), he gave me a good deal and here enters DT (Dusty Taco, Dope Toyota, Dumb Truck, Dirtbike Transporter) :D

Bought it completely stock with 165,000 on the clock

The day I picked up the new truck:

I want to be away from work and busy life with some close friends, beer, and a few essentials. The simpler the better.

The goal now is lightweight, simple, and mostly built by me.

I came into this not knowing how to change my oil and now I am welding things on my truck. For me, half the fun is learning how I messed up and fixing things.

    Graduation Trip
    Day 1-

After months of planning, and a full year since its inception, myself and two friends set off on a two week long road trip to celebrate our recent graduation. We met up early on June 21st and went over our packing list to make sure we had everything we needed before we left.

    DSC00672.jpg

Our trip would take us through six states and 4 national parks over the course of two weeks, with plenty of dirt roads in between.

After pounding pavement for a few hours we hit our first dirt of the trip.

Shortly after we arrived at the trailhead and made our way past thousands (okay maybe I am exaggerating slightly) of people to see our first big waterfall, Vernal Falls.

We made our way down, grabbed some ice cream, and headed down the mountain. We made sure to enjoy our final showers for a while and a cold beer before calling it a day.

    Day 3 -

We slept well in our last night of luxury, Jacob's families cabin serving us well the past few days. However, even with the showers, beds, and air conditioning, we were all ready to do move on and finally do some camping.

    DSC00887.jpg

    DSC00893.jpg

We did mostly highway driving this day, covering over 300 miles.

    DSC00916.jpg

    DSC00933.jpg

We made our way up some tighter trail in search of a potential campsite for the night, the rain in the distance following us as we continued East.

    DSC01004.jpg

We had stopped at an old mining town, and we hopped out of the trucks and explored some of the massive remains that were left.

    Day 4 -

We awoke early the next morning to a view into the valley from camp, having arrived to camp late it was our first time actually really seeing where we spent the night.

    DSC01083.jpg

As I looked over the truck from last nights adventures, I noticed something interesting.

We pressed on and made it across the border before lunch, we were finally in Utah.

    Day 5 -

The next morning we were up early to catch the shuttles into the park, Zion not allowing any public traffic through the main valley. The early morning sun lighting up the safari-like valley as we stared at our main goal for the day, Angels Landing.

I am not one for heights and to be honest, I hated every moment of it. Zac and Jacob are much less afraid of heights and seemed to love the challenge.

    Day 7 -

We were up early to break down camp and make breakfast. A quick trip to Springdale for service and we had a route planned for the day. Our goal to make it near Bryce Canyon and camp for the night, not a hard goal as Bryce Canyon was only a few hours away. Soon we found ourselves back on dirt.

Every so often the trees would break and we were treated with great views of the surrounding area.

    DSC01469.jpg

    DSC01474.jpg

We set up camp and got ready for dinner, camp set up now taking little time as we were starting to find the rhythm of being on the road.

    Day 8 -

Once again we arose to the rising sun, now a little over our halfway mark of the trip. The sun slowly illuminated camp as we got up.

    DSC01498.jpg

As soon as we left camp elements of Bryce Canyon started popping up.

    DSC01504.jpg

Having made our way out of the mountains we sped down the valley towards the reservoir we had passed just the day before.

    DSC01509.jpg

The reservoir looked a little low, but still beautiful.

    DSC01533.jpg

    DSC01582.jpg

    DSC01588.jpg

After a few more hours we made it to big Salt Lake City and checked into our hotel for the night. After a few beers and some mexican food from the restaurant across the street we called it a night, thankful for our comfortable beds.

    Day 9 -

Zac tried opening his back hatch in the morning and felt the handle snap, the old plastic finally gave out. With the hatch unable to open Zac could not access any of his drawers which had his clothes, food, gear, and pretty much anything else he needed to survive the trip.

So we set about to fixing the hatch in a parking garage, and because we couldn't access the door from the inside because of the drawers, it took a lot of time and coaxing to get the dang thing open.

    DSC01645.jpg

    DSC01648.jpg

With a bit of finesse we finally got it open and the latch out. A quick trip to the dealer down the street for a replacement and we had the latch fixed.

    Day 10 -

We spent the entire day exploring Yellowstone, the park is huge and there is so much to see. The steaming ground was a really unique sight.

    DSC01716.jpg

The rock structures that form from these hot springs are incredible, I must've taken hundreds of pictures of every spring we came across. This one was especially cool.

    DSC01841.jpg

We also found that there is a bit of off-roading in the park, well maybe not so much "off-roading" but more like dirt roading. Nonetheless we enjoyed the backroad through the park as we soaked in the views.

    Day 11 -

This day we would be pointing our trucks southwest and making our way back home. We had plans to see a few more stops in Yellowstone before making our way into Grand Teton. Of course a stop at old faithful was in order.

    DSC02092.jpg

    DSC02106.jpg

    DSC02149.jpg

We pushed on through Jackson Hole, stopping for a drink at an old bar, and made our way into Idaho, where we would spend the night.

    DSC02167.jpg

We rolled into a nice flat spot for camp.

    DSC02208.jpg

    DSC02191.jpg

We made camp and enjoyed one of our last nights, listening to the creek below and talking about the trip thus far. We still had a big day ahead of us tomorrow as we planned to head into Nevada and make it to Jarbidge. After fighting the mosquitos off for a few hours we called it a night.

    Day 12 -

We arose early, knowing today was going to be the most mile heavy day of the entire trip. We planned on making it from the Wyoming/Idaho border to the heart of Nevada, a decent amount of those miles being off-road. We quickly packed up camp and got on the road. After a long day pounding pavement we hopped on dirt at the Idaho/Nevada border and drove through Jarbidge, climbing up the backside of the mountains where we aired down and began our quest to find camp.

    DSC02274.jpg

    DSC02280.jpg

We followed the Backcountry Discovery Route from Jarbidge, and planned on arriving in Elko the next morning. The BDRs have alternate routes, and after hearing they are often harder than the main route (the main route being a dirt road essentially) we hoped on the alternate in search of some fun stuff for our last full day.

    DSC02315.jpg

We enjoyed the trail, although it looked like no one had done it in quite a while, the tracks were pretty overgrown in some spots. Nonetheless we had a blast.

    DSC02328.jpg

We continued on and soon found camp for the night towards the end of the short alternate.

    DSC02321.jpg

The sky treated us to a brilliant sunset on our last night. We drank some cold beer and talked about the trips we are planning in the future. It was a weird feeling knowing we'd be home the next day after such a long trip!

    DSC02378.jpg

We called it a night before too late, knowing we still had to cover some ground in the morning.

    Day 13 -

I woke up early to make coffee and prepare for a big breakfast we planned to cook. The last morning deserved a suitable meal and chocolate chip pancakes fit the bill. I have really enjoyed this cheap and simple setup, it's been a comfortable place to sleep, work on things, and of course make breakfasts with!

    DSC02385.jpg

We headed towards the main road and aired up for the last time.

    DSC02386.jpg

After a few hours we made it to Lake Tahoe for some lunch before heading home. It was an incredible trip, and an amazing way to celebrate our graduations. I can't wait to get back on the road with these guys soon!

I love the second gen but the interior is subpar for these kinds of trips. Third gens take the cake regarding comfort on the road.

Thank you man I appreciate it!

Got the truck in to Stellar Built Fabrications here in Sacramento for the cab mount chop. Will be fitting 33s soon!

Headed up to the Sierras this weekend to hit some trails. Will throw up a report when we get back.

    Gold Lakes - 07/21

We went up to Sierra City for some fun in the Gold lakes area, the trail was the most technical any of us had done so far.

    DSC02419.jpg

On 30s I had the smallest tires in the convoy, but besides a few diff scrapes I managed to keep up just fine.

    DSC02429.jpg

    DSC02439.jpg

    DSC02454.jpg

    DSC02464.jpg

    DSC02473.jpg

    DSC02475.jpg

    DSC02490.jpg

    DSC02500.jpg

We made it a few more miles before things started getting interesting. I scraped my diff pretty hard on this obstacle.

    DSC02532.jpg

With 30s I really had to chose my lines carefully.

    DSC02543.jpg

Continuing down, we realized our trail day may go longer than planned, it being already 4:30 and we were still barely halfway done.

    DSC02550.jpg

Even though it was getting late it didn't stop us from stopping and taking in what the Sierra's have to offer.

    DSC02557.jpg

Then we found a fun section that required some smart line choice, and unfortunately the smart line went into the scrub.

    DSC02569.jpg

    DSC02570.jpg

    IMG_3175.jpg

After that obstacle the trail finally smoothed out enough to where we didn't need a spot every few hundred feet.

    DSC02592.jpg

    DSC02598.jpg

    DSC02604.jpg

    DSC02608.jpg

    DSC02610.jpg

We made it back to the cabin around 9:00, 5 hours later than predicted, but man was it a great day!

The tires were rubbing at full lock on the inside of the fenders, luckily the only rubbing at this point.

I also jacked the truck up last week and found a few weak points on the truck that need to be addressed, one being the tie-rods.

Finally got a chance to get out again this weekend, had a fun time relaxing with some old friends who were up visiting. We didn't do much off roading but we did hit some dirt on our way to finding a campsite which gave me a small chance to test clearance with the new 33s, so far so good!

After pushing the truck pretty hard the past few months, there are some areas I'd like to address/refresh within the next few months, here's my list:

    - LBJs (Completed) - OEM LCAs installed
    • Mine are cracked and leaking. I am trying to decide between replacing the joints with greasable joints or maybe getting new OEM lowers as you cannot get OEM LBJs from Toyota for whatever reason.
    - Spark Plugs (Completed) - Checked gaps and wear, looks like dealer replaced with NGKs.
    • I have no records from the dealer showing they were replaced so I'd like to get in there and replace them with some NGKs for good measure.
    - Diffs, T-Case, and Transmission Fluid - Front & Rear Diffs done.
    • Again, I have no records showing if these were replaced or not so I'd like to get fresh oil in there.
-Brakes (Completed) - OEM everything. Wheelers steel brake lines installed.
    • My rotors are warped, also I'd like to do a full refresh, new brake fluid and extended lines. Pads looks great actually.
    - Armor - Front frame chop and building my own winch tray, eventually adding tubing.
    • The ARB bumper is nice piece of mind for hitting a deer but its super heavy and sticks out too much. I'll be replacing it with something minimalist and light.
    - Vibrations (Completed) - Rebuilt OEM Driveshaft
    • I get low speed shudders and bad vibrations from 50-65 mph. I've done the ECGS bearing and driveshaft carrier bracket already so next on my list is to get shims for the rear axle as my angle is pretty bad, also want to replace my carrier bearing.
    - Rear Suspension (Completed) - Ubolt flip, shackle flip, and B110s
    • While I have the leafs pulled off the axle I'd like to get a u-bolt flip kit, new bump stops.
    - Lighting (Completed) - SuperBrightLEDs 7" Rounds and HF Cheapo lights
    • I have held off on lights for a while but with winter approaching and a greater need for light, I'd like to get some more light up front. Also adding camp lighting around the prinsu rack would be super helpful for setting up camp in the dark.
    - Rear Bumper - Simple tube
    • Custom rear? I need to learn how to weld, LOL
