no it's not a ripoff. either buy something outright or pay a subscription. It's only been done that way for a thousand years...

Get a 6MT and you won't have to worry about being charged, because it does not have the feature....

I believe the monthly charge is only for starting it with your smart phone.
I think you can start it with the key fob, in line of sight, without a subscription.

Seems pretty steep. I pay $40 yearly for my cellular remote start.

Toyota remote start sucks anyway. It turns off when you hit the start button or whatever.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say the opposite. Why do you think it should be free? Do you expect Toyota to pay the cell network provider for you?

Toyota has to use a 3rd party cell network for the remote start from your phone to work. And guess what? They charge Toyota and Toyota charges you. Yeah, they make money on it but you don't have to use that feature.

So either pony up and pay it or use the fop to start it.

It's Toyota Connected Services, in this case Remote Connect. Lets you remote start, lock and unlock the doors, and get your mileage and fuel level via the Toyota app on your smartphone. Also has a few other gizmos of limited value. They give it to you free for a year. After that if you don't want it, don't pay for it. If you do want it, in the US it's $8/month or $80 for the year. I guess they get you for a bit more in Canada.

It shouldn't have been a surprise. They do tell you, just like the SiriusXM trial, although that's only 3 months.

As long as I still have GPS and touch unlocking I guess I don't need it. Thanks for the replies.

You can do other things with the service, I.e. remotely lock or unlock it. You could put something in the truck for somebody stopping by to pick up when you aren’t home. They would simply text you when they arrive, you remotely unlock it form them from anywhere in the country then lock it back up a moment later. Easy peasy. I’m sure there’s other similar things you do which could provide a benefit.

$10/month. Is it worth it? Only you can decide. Think of the many other $10 bills we all spend, sometimes needlessly, on our trucks. I could dial my oil changes, and I mean ALL of them, diffs, xfr, tranny, etc… and find more than that $10. Bet some of you could too- just saying.

For me, I’m 6 months into the trial period so I don’t know what I’m going to do but Covid has caused me not to use the truck much of all.

I believe it is a growing trend. BWM i read is going hard-core this way; not just apps/software like remote start and "On-Star" like service but those fancy headlights that turn with the steering wheel and heated seats. Subscription required to enable.

I believe high end Tesla: there is no physical difference between the models with the longest and 2nd longest range; pay more $ and the next level gets "unlocked"

IMO: with what I see as a trend of people who don't do a ANY work on their own cars; stay 100% stock; buy extended warranties all the time and generally flip vehicles even before the current one is paid off.... I cannot believe leasing or similar is not more prevalent.

We’re complaining about a few bucks for a luxury service that we could simply say no thanks to.

    Times have changed

Totally agree. Plus, don't be affraid and write email to them, explaining why you doing that. Avoid profanity, but go straight ahead.
Call (Greed is a Greed) things with own names. I did, and its's works.
