    Hi all

My son inherited my father in laws year 2000 mercedes. Looking for a good forum or resource for electronics to figure out an issue.

Just to explain what "fun" I am having. Overengineered piece of sh

Replaced the audio deck with an aftermarket. Everything works, except the rear speakers. Good old mercedes bose system has an OPTICAL CONNECTION to the rear amp. So I need a doofy adapter to speak light speed because apparently 8 feet of copper wire was too SIMPLE and EASY. But not for the fronts which work fine. Yeeeesh

Can you tell how much I love the thing. Makes me appreciate my Tacoma a whole lot more.

    Thanks

I betcha the easiest is to strip the amps and all optical, and install 100% aftermarket.

Definitely. But the concept was to just put in a simple bluetooth deck for the kiddo. It's so close to working, throwing in a little decoder box is still worth doing.

So the other issue I neglected to add, mercedes changed their optical network stuff in 03. So everything I have found available online is the "newer" version, and his car is on the older stuff. Its a super nice car, engine is in great shape. Its pretty immaculate so it's worth doing. I agree with you in spirit, my tacoma is 100% aftermarket amped etc. But the budget isn't there for it this time.

Makes sense. I kind of have a soft spot for the old Germans.

My grandad's last car was a 1990 C class diesel. Great little car. He picked the thing up as a company car in Zimbabwe and loved it so much he snuck it on the container bound for home. The only trouble it ever had was trying to sell it after he passed. Apparently it's near impossible to title a 20 year old vehicle with no record history besides an old African bill of sale.

My son just reported that the front speakers are breaking up and sound bad. So that means the front amp sucks, and the back amp is unreachable... yeah this problem is writing its own solution. The car battery is in the trunk, where the amp would go anyways... yeah.
