Howdy. Planning excursion to New Mexico in late early or late spring 2021. Will be just me and my son. I've never been there but it's all he's talked about since going with his grandparents a few years ago. We both want to do some exploring and hopefully run across a stream or 3 where we can catch some fish.

NOT looking for gnarly off roading. Definitely looking for riding some trails in higher elevations, fishing and camping away from the masses. My research has lead me here https://www.trailsoffroad.com/states/NM Chamisoso Canyon states it's easy and has "dispersed camping". Guess that is the type of spot we're looking for. really looking for some suggestions too.

    Needs:
    • Limited gnar - if any
    • Near water/stream for fishing
    • Away from people

Are you looking to go to Red River or just NM in general?

So, that trail you linked Chamisoso canyon is fun but, there are only a few camping spots that are all predetermined. It is a pretty fun area for sure. However, that trail is around 3 hours from Red River. Goose Lake is a must do up in Red River.

Hey thanks again @NMrunner OK got some names from my son from last time he was there. Carson Natl Forest and Eagle Nest Lake and Taos. The latter sounds way too crowded. I'm clueless though. As I stated above, looking to get away from crowds, explore back roads - we're in 4x4 but not looking for crazy stuff, dispersed camping and catching some fish. More I've been reading we may push trip to beginning of summer. I'll be looking up Goose lake too. And thanks again man.

How is the road up to goose lake? Have seen some videos. Looks to be almost a single vehicle road.

I know this is a few months old, but Cimarron State Park is a near Red River - and is great for fishing. Access pretty much the entire area accept for right below the dam area. The Red River is fishable, but depending on runoff or time of spring that you go, could be a bit off colored. There is also the Rio Grande, which is a bit further from Red River but offers some wonderful views. But again, timing is key as runoff also plays a factor on the Rio Grande. This area is called the Enchanted Circle - Taos, Red River and Angel Fire (Eagles Nest). It’s beautiful but also can act as a springboard to other areas in Northern New Mexico. Costilla Creek is another area for fishing/camping.

Hope you are able to get out and visit the area.

Probably too late, but the Valle Vidal is pretty amazing if you have never been. North of Red River a little, but a few camp sites in it as well.
