Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
(Which is probably why Toyota doesn't offer remote starters with manuals.)

    Nope.

Toyota Corp. bears absolutely no responsibility for some fucking idiot's butchering of the electrical/starting system. The dealer that installed it and/or whoever sold the remote system are at fault. Prepare for the finger pointing from those two to be the biggest hurdle.

Me personally, I’d own up to my mistake and just fix it or get it fixed.
Acting “dumb” is not good. It’s called lying in my book.
Acting honest is what’s actually “good”

The smoke could have been the rubber melting off the hot wire going to the starter .

It is possible to have a manual with a remote start and do it safely. The one's I've used in the past require a certain sequence of events to arm the system, usually stopping, shifting to neutral, setting the parking brake and then turning off the engine. If you do any of that in the wrong order or unlock/open a door before hitting the remote start it will not work. Other than having to rely solely on the parking brake to keep the vehicle from moving it is perfectly safe and foolproof.
