I have a 09 access cab SR5 4wd. Im searching for insights on. The rear differential. Can i swap out the SR5 8.4 rear diff. with drum brakes. To a TRD elocker with disc brakes rear diff.
My SR5 has 3.73 gears with limited slip to the best of my knowledge. I know as long as the TRD has the gear ratio that my 4wd is ok in that capacity. Im just not sure on the problems if any that i could run into with the elocker systems and the disc brake system and the possible if any issues if the TRD model is a 8. Verus my 8.4.thank you to all for any and all advice and knowledge shared..

I think only the TRD sport comes with the 8.4

Trd off road has 8” diff and drum brakes. And that’s the only one that comes with a locker.

You could look into FJ or 4runner the later 2010 has an 8.2" I believe but the earlier were also 8". You could do Disc then consider the master upgrade. You could also go with an 8.4 add e locker and disc conversion if that's your end goal.

Thank you. Ive already turned it down. But on the rear disc brake topic. I personally know ghat here kn the south eastern portion of the U.S. that yes Tacoma's late gen 2 and gen3 models you can order rear disc brake system from dealership. Just as you could order the magnuson supercharged 4.0 V6 on hour tacoma before Toyota Corp. Discontinued that.and the TRD model prerunner was not the only ones you could get that factory upgrade on.i bought my 09 SR5 access cab with the supercharger on it when it was delivered go me in Nov.of 2009.and ive been fully satisfied with that purchase. I get almost 380miles per tank of gas were as my baby brother did not.our trucks are exact with my supercharged 4.0 and his is not and at best he gets 275 miles per tank full

while I’m not calling you a liar I am doubting that option on the disc brakes. If anything, Toyota probably offers front drums over rear discs, 40k for a truck that has the same suspension as 20 years ago

yes Toyota did offer a supercharger from the factory but I never heard of them offering disc brakes. That’s the first time I hear that.

    From what I have heard
    2dr reg/single cab 4x4 2.7L/I4 (4x4) has 4.10 factory gears. Supposedly swappable

with Off Road package having 8" rear E-locker said to be a weaker housing that can break (not sure under what circumstance)
and TRD Sport in earlier years being 8.4" LSD with a "bigger stronger" housing.

Toyota Engineer: "Look we're going to take this off road truck. Slap a Sport sticker on it. Pretend it's gonna be kept as a Nissan 350Z. Even though it's a high truck. Let's give it linear springrate like a street car. SPORT. Don't give the Off Road the bigger strong diff housing.
Give it to the truck we're pretending is only going to be used for turning left on green at a 4 way intersection slightly faster than normal."

I wonder what the best way to do it is,
    including cost balance
such as gearing change, locker addition, and so on. I bet going any further than that (whole different rear end, etc.) would be more expensive.
YouTube channel K Flo's Krib I think has some videos on what he decided to do with his 2nd gen, that may also be a Sport 8.4"
I believe to regear for bigger tires and camper weight, he decided to also install some ARB air lockers while in there.
Sounds great. But expensive. Like $2500+

I hear some gearsets (different companies) are also quieter than others.
    No idea how to choose.
Some people are like, "4.10 is the best. And cheapest and easiest."
    "4.56 yo"
    "4.88 is the answer"
    "5.29 for life"
"I upgraded my tires from 30" to 30.005" and there is a bird feather in my truck bed; I need 5.29."
"Spending $2k+ on this gearset kept my MPG the same or worsened it. I'm glad I did it."
