Replace stock horns with louder versions?

Looking for straightforward article to replace 2nd gen Taco stock horns with louder versions in same locations without additional relays, wires, and other hassle items. So, anyone know of a "how to" on installing stock location, stock wiring, 12v electric horns that are just louder? Prefer tried and true versions not "might work" options. Thanks all !! If you want real volume, gotta use relays and extra wiring. Otherwise just need to find horns that are inherently louder. The Cadillac horns should work, hella horns make disc versions that are louder than stock, but if you wanna really make a sound, it's not difficult to wire

 

I don’t use my horn more than maybe twice a year, not sure why anyone wants a louder horn on a passenger vehicle. With all the nut jobs and road ragers out there using your horn much, especially a loud horn is probably a good way to get your truck damaged and your ass kicked. But what ever, good luck with the loud horn.

 

Going to upgrade mine because the SR comes with a wimpy single horn that goes meep meep like some European Mini car lol. It’s a truck, needs a truck horn.

 

The traffic in Northern California is obviously very different than Seattle. Seattle ranks about as bad as it can get for drivers. And they're 99% more likely to blog about getting honked at than even acknowledge they almost merged into you without even bothering to look

 

Thanks for the replies and concerns about honking my horn, I live in the mountains and sometimes when passing or trying to let someone know your position it's nice to have a horn that can be heard. My BMW has a great "Euro" sound that is very audible, my two Cadillacs also have superb horns, however as you other owners know the Tacoma horn sounds more like it belongs on a small sedan from Yugoslavia So, if anyone can recommend horns great, otherwise i'll just try some out and see what works. If I get a tone that's Tacoma worthy I'll try to post the info. I like Wyckedan's pic, how well do those 4 disc horns work?

I have the Park Avenue set up. I know nothing about wiring and it was easy peasy for me to install. Love the sound. Tyler is great to work with. I hope that he is back up and running now that we are post-COVID.

 

Those are monstrously loud. You can hear them from the next county

 

Simple answer,leave your horn alone unless you want too get shot in a road rage incident.

 

It’s a horn. If you’re too afraid of what might happen if you blow it when someone is about to change lanes onto you, you probably don’t need to be driving. horns are included for a reason lol. As I stated earlier my SR has a single horn, not duals as many do and it’s not very loud. Even the stock dual Oem horns are not very good imho. So yes, upgrade for louder dual tones or other horns for safety if you wish.

 

A horn is an essential safety device like turn signals. It's all in how you use it. A brief toot to wake someone who's still on their phone after the light turns green ( make a 5 count before you tap the horn) is not a bad thing. A blast to let a jackass know to get back in their lane as they drift toward imminent collision with you is also appropriate. There are a lot of blind and complacent people out there and a good horn is useful. There are also people who use it too much, and nothing says a-hole like the impatient driver stuck in traffic who just leans on it.

I'm putting a Stebel air horn in. Does require a relay, but it's relatively easy.

Find an old 4 door sedan from the 1970s. Those land yachts had serious horns. Typically, mounted behind the grill in front of the radiator.

Many were 4 tone horn sets, meaning 4 horns. 1 horn=1 tone.

Modern (stock) horns sound like a Chihuahua sneezing into a pillow.

If you have a "loud" horn, the Pomeranian is sneezing into a tissue.

 

Yep that is what Bartmaster1234 does. He sources them from junk yard Cadillacs, etc sandblasts them , tests, paints, and supplies you with a wiring harness and relay. My "Park Avenue" is A-D-C-F (4 horns). Loud but not obnoxious. Definitely gives me a usable horn.
