What kind of gun do you need to stop a brown bear at close range? AA12 with drum mag?

I love it when someone comes up with unsupported statistics. Why you ask. Well it reminds my of one of my favorite writers, Mark Twain.

Old Sam penned a like that is as true today as when it was first written. “There are three types of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics”.

As was taught in a statistics class four decades ago, by selecting your raw data carefully you can support any contention.

I carry a .45 Colt Blackhawk and have never been injured in a bear attack. Therefore it stands to reason, in the areas I frequent the .45 Colt Blackhawk is 100% effective against bears. Whereas the above statistics show spray to be only 98% effective.

In other words, for every 100 uses bear spray two people are injured. Those who carry the Blackhawk have 0 injuries per 100 attacks.

Now both sides can argue for or against my assertion using there chosen data points and both be equally correct and wrong simultaneously.

Well it depends on who you ask. There are some guides in Alaska that say you have to carry a 44 mag revolver. The first 2 shots are "rat shot" so that you can blind the animal and destroy its nose, because even if it can't you it can smell you and will continue to destroy you. The rest of the shots are so you put it out of its misery. Other say a .300 will be enough. Others swear by bear spray. :notsure::notsure::notsure::notsure:

Imagine posting something as blatantly ignorant as this.

Heres the article https://mountainjournal.org/to-live-and-die-in-grizzly-country Im sure they have a link to the studies that support their claims.

Now, for :crapstorm: and giggles: You count bear attacks where bear mace was used as a deterrent, and then you count how many were stopped by bear mace, not how many times you were attacked while carrying bear mace. Then you count bear attacks where guns were used as a deterrent (you can even get as specific as which caliber and configuration was used), and you count how many were stopped by guns, not how many times you were attacked while carrying a gun.

50 bear attacks where bear mace was used. 49 were successful. 49/50 = 98%

    0 bear attacks where a .45 Colt Blackhawk was used. 0 successful. 0/0 = N/A

This came out three days ago and has actual people with actual experience with both spray and guns. Feel free to disagree with any of them or not… this is the internet after all.
