This is the truth. If you can't understand what I did and why, you shouldn't be attempting this type of mod. The setup worked flawlessly for several thousand miles until someone decided to total the truck for me.

Ya. I re-read everything and it makes a lot of sense now. I will definitely be doing it.

my only question is will it work with the cv axle bearing/bushing. because our bushings dont work with awd so I dont know if it will work with ours.

Damn after all that work. Did you buy it back for part out or repair?

No toyota ever came with a torsen differential in the front, so there isn't really one to model a setup after. I went with the setup I did, because I was sure that it would work without issue. If I had it to do all over again, I would probably just do a harrop e-locker with the AWD T-case. Torque steer with the torsen takes a little getting used to, but I didn't even notice it unless I was driving faster than I should've been.

Losing my rig was a bummer, but c'est la vie. I picked up a ZR2 Bison with the baby duramax and haven't looked back.

Yes, that will work like clockwork.

But it’s got nothing to do with what the OP did

Got a better place for unconventional front diff chatter? Got a link to "will work like clockwork"?

Here I was thinking I was the only one who stumbled across this little hack. Can't find any write ups on it so ive been hesitant to buy the frs diff. Then bam, confirmation. I'm building a drift truck out of my 620 and decided upon a pre 78 8 inch since it didn't require shortening and I've seen their durability (worked at a diff shop for a few years). I figured being a g series it would work and be cheaper than a kaaz unit. I think having to drill out some holes is worth the 1/10th cost of all the other torsion options. Thanks for the write up. Now I can move on with the build as scheduled.

I just bought a 2018 front clamshell with 4.30's in it. Should be at my house in a week. I'll be updating my build thread with the process.

Sorry to be reviving an old thread, but there is some good info here. I just don't feel like all the questions have been answered, at least not in one place.
I've read the whole thread and these are the lingering questions I have:
    1) Does an FRS diff carrier work for sure in an 8" clamshell with ADD? If not, why?
    2) Does the diff housing need to be ground for clearance or not?
    3) Does the ECGS bushing work? Is machining required?
    4) Are there any issues (other than the bolt hole size) with using 4.88 gears meant for an 8" clamshell?
    5) What is done about the smaller bearing ID? Does anything need to be machined? Just use the 90366-50001 FRS bearings with 50mm ID?
    6) Have you actually done this mod? What was your experience? Any long-term issues?

Hey Guys, so i have been following this thread as i was considering the options for a front LSD instead of an E-Locker.
My truck has 3.91 gearing currently with an ADD front differential. 4wd (4H & 4L) is manually engaged via a shift lever.
Using this guide, does it mean its possible to have a helical LSD installed to the front?
How will this interact with the ADD system? since it only releases the right side axle from the differential center.

Came across this thread and wanted to share. East Coast Gear Supply offers a Torsen for the front clamshell, I noticed it when I was putting my order in. ecgs Torsen.jpg

Wonder if it is the same one I posted above, since I looked in the past and hadn't seen any on the market. Hence the OPs thread about how to make one happen.

I was thinking it could be the same one too. I gave it some thought when I was ordering, I ended up with ARB. I'm fairly certain the Raptor has a Torsen in the front stock, but I'm not sure.

I purchased the one of this thread for about $250 on eBay almost immediately after OP posted his pics, been sitting because I hate pulling these diffs by myself. I do want to install it, can't wait until I quit reno my house and get back to truck stuff.
