Any Regrets? I have a few...

I recently sold my first gen Tacoma.

Now....I miss my Tacoma. I had planned on getting something better on gas, or something stupid like that. BUT after doing some serious thinking, it makes sense to have a truck. I work from home now, too, so I can just eat the fuel costs when I go on trips.

Any regrets with getting a new Taco? I am thinking about searching for a manual, here in DFW.

The idea of having a new car payment makes me sick, but I know Tacoma's have great resell value, and of course are reliable as hell.

Really just looking for input, conversation, things to look out for, etc...

You chose a pretty bad time to buy. If you can find a deal you are happy with, then do your thing! I have owned every generation of Tacoma, I like this one.

    I've paid my dues
    Time after time
    I've done my sentence
    But committed no crime
    And bad mistakes
    I've made a few
I've had my share of sand
    Kicked in my face
    But I've come through
So gonna buy a Toy-ota-toy-ota-toyota ota!
    I am a Ta-coma fan
And I will be driving a third gen
    I love Toy-ota
    We love Ta-coma
    No time for losers
    Because I love Ta-coma

I regret selling my 2000 single cab 2.7 MT 4x4 everyday. Like the new truck with more room, more towing, more tech. But I loved the 1st gen manual everything (hubs, windows, door locks) still got 20 mpg, didn't burn oil. Clear coat was going but that was it. I owned it from 63 miles to 158,000 miles 19 years.
If I still had the 1st gen I would have sold the 2019 for more than I bought it for. But such is life.....

When I purchased my 2020 AC MT in the color of my choosing, I was planning on selling my 2004 Xtra Cab AT Tacoma. But I just couldn't do it. While I thoroughly enjoy my new Tacoma with its manual transmission and electronic doohickery, there's just something about the 1st Gen I really like even if I only drive it occasionally. Perhaps its the coziness of the 1st Gen cab, the Recaro seats I had installed, the Line-X in the bed, the ARE camper shell, or the more solid feel when I'm driving down the highway. Whatever the reason, I decided it was worth the extra insurance expense and hassle of finding garage space rather than regret giving up a vehicle I have such a fondness for.

If having a payment makes you "sick" then don't get a new car. Get one you don't have to make payments on. Lol makes you sick

Life is too short to end up saying "I should of, I could of, I would of", if you want a truck and can afford it without doing something dumb -- find one you like and get it.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Regrets?
    None.
    Adjustments?
    Many:
    - When I retired my '06 TRD OR AC and took ownership of my '21 TRD OR AC I found 15 years worth of technological 'refinements' to adapt to.
    - Also the adjustment of switching to a 6 speed auto from a 6 speed manual.
    - Then getting to understand the difference between the 4.0V6 vs the 3.5V6. It's a different animal.
    - Fuel mileage is improving tank by tank - now at 7+K miles I'm getting 19± MPG. Took about 50K on the '06 to get there.
    - Unlike many here on TW, I will NOT be lifting it or swapping to 33"+ tires. Most all mods will be for aesthetics and comfort.
    - I ordered it the way I wanted it. Took 6 months and 6 days to arrive.
As many here will tell you, it's a poor time to get a good deal on a new Taco.

I absolutely loved my 1st gen and traded it recently for a 2020 with 24K miles, I don't regret it one bit although like you, I don't like the payment but this too shall pass.

You had me at manual. Car payments suck, but resale value and longevity of life make it more tolerable for sure. Plus the manuals are a dying breed and would be shocked if it carries over to the 4th gen. so best to enjoy it now.

I will say this if you have a vehicle now that works you might want to ride out this truck shortage for a little bit until prices level out a bit.

I say try a different car for a few years. A roof box and a hitch on a medium-clearance vehicle can get you and your stuff a lot of places. If you are frugal for a few years perhaps you can save enough to pay cash for a sweet fourth Gen in the mid 2020s.

Not everyone needs a truck. If I didn’t have a family of four and bikes and climbing and kiting gear and all sorts of other crap for my frequent outings, I would have seriously considered something that gets better mileage too -like a used Rav 4.
