I'll have to pay attention to that, I live in NJ. Full service gas here, those attendants will bust the door guaranteed

Found CRC 3045 works well and lasts long compared to your regular lubricating oils.

+1 to the misaligned fuel door as a result of a stuck hinge. I spent 10 minutes getting irritated and walked away from it. I don’t have a particularly short fuse but the 3 dimensional misalignment and stuck/bent hinge makes me appreciate the guys in the body shop even more.

Just had this happen to me today. 2017 with 70,xxx miles. I had no issue opening the fuel door. Go to close the fuel door after pumping and it no longer aligned. I think I entertained the one guy at Sheetz on the patio as he watched me try to figure out how to close my fuel door. Got it shut and fixed/aligned it better when I got to work. Not impressed. Why should something so simple as a fuel door be so complicated/poorly designed? Oh well, this is the only major "3rd Gen" problem I have experienced. Should count myself lucky.

Fuel door on my 2nd Gen would pop open on its own after a drive once in a while. Sounds similar to this.

So this same thing happened to my 2012.
    The hinge is trashed.
I noticed there are 2 rivets holding this door assembly in.
Does anyone know a place online I could purchase this door assembly? I could do the install myself.

I had something similar happen but I had ice on the inside I didn't see and bend the hinge a bit, I saw what was going on before it was too late and was able to chip the ice out.

Lesson learned. The lower hinge point on my 09 rusted and broke a few years ago. One of the first things I did to the 2019 is apply Bel-Ray chain lube the two hinge points (Bel-Ray is anti-corrosion, anti-fling off, does not attract dirt, and I already had some). I will apply it every time I change oil (twice a year).

I had the same issue with my fuel door. It bent out on the lower fwd corner. Come to find out, one of the hinges had broken causes the door to chaff on the outer housing. Since my trick was still under the original factory warranty, they repainted entire left side of the fender and fuel door area. Then they replace the door. I am going to keep the door hinges lubed to prevent the hinges from corroding then breaking off. You would think that Toyota would come up with a better fuel door design.

The one who dies with the most stuff wins.
Had the same problem and this picture did the trick. Just by looking at it I couldn’t figure out what needed to be done, but this picture showed me exactly what I needed to do. Thank you!

Has anyone taken the fuel door off to mess with everything? Feel like remove/install can't be too difficult

This just happened to me, and I have no idea how. Gassed up, and then it wouldn't close. I'm in Canada, and Toyota wants $250USD ($300CAD) to replace it. The door comes unpainted, and half of that cost is painting it. It seems to happen so often, it must be some kinda design flaw. Oh, yeah, they won't cover it under warranty.

Mine’s been messed up for about a year, but was still able to be closed. Now it won’t stay closed, it’ll hit the pin but pop right back off. So now I’m driving around looking like an idiot with a fuel door that stays open when driving. Contacted my local body shop and said most of the time they can tweak it back in to shape, otherwise he said to paint it and order a part would be about $700. I about lost my cool on that one. Then they said it’s because they’d have to paint match the entire bedside to the door, like nah man. If it’s just a slightly different shade of red because it had to be replaced, I honestly don’t care. Not spending $700 on that plus the few $$$ I just dropped on a new windshield and if I ever did my passenger door it would be well north of $1K too.

Just want my dang fuel door to shut again. Picture of the pricing on the 1st page will be super helpful for guidance if I do go the replacement route.

Just happened to me. Same problem, fuel door out of nowhere wouldn’t shut. To answer the question about how the door is attached, it is attached with really heavy duty rivets. I drilled them out, removed the whole fuel door assembly, new one cost $83. $65 for local body shop to paint and install the new one. Like others have said, body shop said perfect paint match is tough but they could get 95% match. Otherwise they have to repaint the whole panel which would be significantly more money.

This just happened to me yesterday on my 2017 Tacoma. Filled the tank, tried to close the door, and wouldn’t close. This solution worked for me. I gently pried the bottom hinge out until realigned. While doing that I noticed the bottom hinge was full of rust which caused the problem. So, I squirted a little PB Blaster into both hinges and worked/pressed a very thin rag into the hinge using my fingernail and opened/closed multiple times. Then when the hinge was no longer orange (think I got the rust) I lubed with 3M oil. I couldn’t find my lithium grease and will follow up with that. What a PITA. I’m glad this happened while near my home vs being hundreds of miles away getting gas.
