So back in, I believe, 1978, Dad & I drove from Omaha to Great Falls to meet up with our friend Ted & a couple of his friends. We then drove to Wolf Creek & up a twisty, snow-covered road to Ted’s hunting cabin.
We had been up the previous year before the cabin was built & had to deal with sub-zero temps in an uninsulated pickup shell.

So this year was nice with a cabin & wood stove.
I think this was one of the years that I got a deer, so at the end of our trip I would have been looking for an elk (MT non-res permits were good for 1 deer, an elk, bear, small game & fishing.)
So anyway, this last day Ted & I were hunting together & Dad was by himself. We split up at a fire lookout at the point where 3 or 4 ridges met, planning to follow different ridges for a while then meet back at the top & take the one ridge back to the cabin.
Ted & I ended up in some rough terrain and ultimately decided we wouldn’t make it back to the fire tower before dark so we headed across the ridge straight back to the cabin.
Meanwhile, Dad made it back to the fire tower and figured at some point that he’d have to head back without us.
However, from the tower the ridges looked pretty much the same, and he chose the wrong one.
Of course we had no idea whether he was ok, so we eventually drove back through the deep snow into town, where we contacted the authorities. Within a couple hours there was a search & rescue base station set up and trackers heading up on foot & snowmobiles throughout the night. They came across his tracks, but weren’t able to find him.
Meanwhile, Dad built a fire & settled down for the night. Fortunately it wasn’t terribly cold - probably around 30 degrees.
At daylight, while the S&R people continued to look, he headed downhill on the other side of the mountain, and came to a road which had just reopened the day before. Some other hunters came driving by & gave him a ride into town, so all the bad scenarios that we’d been visualizing were put to rest.

The rest of the day was spent slogging back to the cabin & packing up for the trip back to Great Falls.
By the time we were ready to get on the road, it was decided that I would drive, as I was the only one of the 3 of us who had gotten any sleep the night before. Dad didn’t sleep as he was trying to stay warm, and Ted had spent the night working with the S&R people to try to identify where he might have gone.

We were only a few miles out of town on the interstate when I felt the back end of the truck slip a bit, and started to realize that I was driving on freezing rain. As we crested a hill and started down, the sliding became serious. Dad & Ted were both yelling at me to take it easy - Ted said later that he knew we were in trouble when I started going hand-over-hand with the steering wheel.

I ended up spinning 180 and hitting the center guard rail with the right side of the rear bumper (heavy angle iron, fortunately), then the truck bounced back & smacked the right front tire hard enough to shear the bolts on the steering link on the drivers side.
The small homemade utility trailer we were towing racked enough to pop the doors open, spewing gear onto the road, including a box of ammo that ended up spread around.
Once we pushed the truck out of the way, Dad & Ted hitched a ride back to Wolf Creek to get a tow truck.
They found the local tow truck owner at the bar about 3 sheets to the wind. He told them he’d get going after a cup of coffee.
Fortunately one of his drivers showed up in time to to go instead.
Meanwhile, I was alone looking at the damage I’d done when the state cop showed up. I explained the situation, and he took a look and said “well, there probably isn’t $100 worth of damage here, so I don’t think I’ll bother writing up a report”. Dad figured he must have been about to go off shift and didn’t want to go to the effort.
That was really lucky for us, since he didn’t look back 100’ to see the section of guard rail I’d wiped out, or look to see that I was a 15 year old driving on a Nebraska learner’s permit, or that Dad had forgotten to renew the truck registration and it was 2 months out of date.
Our other hunting companions had been in front of us so never realized there was a problem until they got home and got our message.
The bar that we had spent a fair amount of time at had a room out back that usually was used by people sleeping off a rough night, so we managed to get in a few hours of sleep.
The next morning our other hunting buddy Al drove back from Great Falls with bolts & tools, so after a couple hours of messing around we finally got back on the road and finished the trip.
My 17 year old sister was alone at home in Nebraska and totally unaware of the situation when a reporter called looking for info, so that sent the rest of the family into a tizzy. We all ended up getting interviewed by the local newspaper when we got home.
After Dad retired in 1980 and we moved to NH, he still went back almost every year for the next 25-30 years to hunt with Ted. The last adventure was probably about 5 years ago when Dad flew to Utah, then he & Ted spent about 5 weeks driving to Alaska, driving a 1 ton with a camper and pulling a trailer with a boat & 4wheeler on it. Dad would have been about 80 then, Ted a few years younger.
We lost Dad about 2-1/2 years ago, when he discovered that he was no longer faster or stronger than his John Deere backhoe. Up to the end he was still active with the fire department, kept playing with his backhoe & skidder, and making maple syrup every spring.

Holy moly what a trip and great story! Sorry for losing your dad a few years ago. Sounds like you've got some amazing stories to hold onto

Morning all. I should have taken a pic of my #2 tire that was on the rim when I got into work yesterday. I had taken all my PSI measurements Friday afternoon before leaving for the weekend! I’m hoping for better results today.
Today I’ll be leaving my route and going to the orthopedic surgeon for a exam and then back on the road. Told work I really need to get this done. Surgeon I saw thinks bursitis and gave me a cortisone shot that only worked a little 3 weeks ago. A little worried

Edit: I just gotta figure the most efficient way to leave in my route…..

Everyone always thinks that because we (okay, admittedly me) keep a well stocked bar that we must obviously drink anything.

Oh, how wrong that assumption would be.

We had an unopened bottle of jagermeister on our hutch for the longest time, probably many years. A friend "found" it in the freezer of his house and brought it over to us because he thought Rob and Tiffany might drink it at some point.

Nope.

Maybe we would have friends come by and drink it?

Nope. Everyone was well past that jager phase and us moving more and more rural meant that we weren't hosting friends as much as well as having our fridge and liquor hutch full of folks randoms that they'd insist on "leaving for next time"

I may have actually thrown out away in the garbage before we moved here after not finding anyone to give it away to.

My main problem with jager was getting into the habit of drinking it in a 20oz cup over a few cubes of ice . A few cups in and I would be transcended in the shadow realm , still functioning but unaware of anything .

like the time I dry humped my veterinarian at a wedding .

I only know the stories thanks to friends giving me the play by play while I died the next day .

almost 3 years sober now! Woot woot

Holy moly what a trip and great story! Sorry for losing your dad a few years ago. Sounds like you've got some amazing stories to hold onto
