Hey I was wondering if anyone knows anything about if I possibly messed up the transmission by putting the truck into park while it was rolling and the brakes wouldn’t work. There was brake fluid all over the ground from I guess a broken line. My truck is a 2018 Toyota Tacoma Trd sport 45k miles

Yeah, emergency brake would have been my first choice too but I guess you had to do what you had to do to stop the truck without any brakes! Damage might be dependent on how fast you were moving, but as a rule it is never good for the drive train to slam a moving vehicle into park!

Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago and my ebrake didnt engage for some crazy reason. I was rolling backwards, brake pedal went to the floor, and ebrake went to the floor and I was still rolling. Got home and tested ebrake and it seems to work in my driveway. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

You must have been just slowly rolling? Check to see if your parking prawl still holds by parking on a hill.

Think of it like stopping a grinder by pushing the spindle lock. Same kinda concept. Wether or not it did damage. Idk

Probably not. I've thrown many a rental in park like that

I'm curious about the brake line....got a cranky neighbor, piss off a coworker or ex lately? Was the line cut or the banjo bolt backed out of the caliper?

I've heard of cheap brake lines bursting before but if the line looks severed or like it came loose that might be a little sus

I think that there are safeguards I read about somewhere to protect the transmission for those types of incidents. I guess you could take it to a transmission place or the dealer for them to checkout, but if it's driving ok you should be fine. You can always drain the fluid and see if any parts come out...lol. Years ago I had a 68 Mustang and we were driving home from SC to VA. Eldest daughter reaches over from the back seat (before car seats) and threw the shifter into Park from Drive. I can't duplicate the sound it made but I think in translation it was transmission speak 'WTF!!!'. Put it back in Drive and kept on getting it. No apparent issues turned up in subsequent years.

Its also a good idea whether parked on level ground, or a grade to set your E brake after putting the truck in park even if loading/driving on a light trailer.

Probably rounded the parking pin pretty good unless you sheared it off. I’m with what others have said what was the brake failure? Front, rear, master, abs module??? With brake fluid everywhere I’m guessing either a busted line or botched repair, did you have brake service done recently?

Even if a line broke on one corner, wouldnt there still be effective stopping power on the opposite half of the system? Ive never dug into brakes that much other than regular service but I thought there were essentially two separate circuits. One front and one rear, to avoid situations like this in the event of complete pressure loss on one side..

I just stopped in as I want to know how a three-year-old truck had brake line failure. If you have a 4" lift and didn't address line length that could happen.

Going through a divorce and pissed off soon-to-be ex-wife, ya saw that happen to. [I ended up with the kids, dogs, house. Single Dad, quite happy.]

In theory, yes, but you have to think and pump brakes. It's just with one side without a fluid pedal that goes further down. So your brain freaks out as muscle memory says brakes should have engaged. Pumping three times and holding breaks your mind hesitation, and in the case of a bad master cylinder seal is just what you want to do.

I had rear wheel bearing shatter, drum separated out from the axle. Lots of smoke from the tire against the fender, put my foot on the brakes. Rear-wheel cylinder pops, draining fluid. No emergency brake. Master Cylinder should have operated front pads, but not really. Shut off the engine to slow to a stop. My rear locker had failed, acting like a locked diff. Great for Baja events, but lousy for street driving. Fun times.

I believe you're okay. IIRC, there's a kinda throwout/override built into transmissions so if it is jammed into a lower gear, or park, it will throw out the gear and shut off the truck. I had this happen with my '04 F150 when I had to slam on brakes and a guitar case toppled and hit my console shifter, dropping the truck into park. Everything shut off and the truck coasted to a stop. I thought I'd killed it. I thumbed through the owner's manual on the side of the road and learned about the shift override. I cranked it up and drove off. The truck drove fine for another three years before I was t-boned and it was totaled.
