You need to tear down a transmission!

Old Job, I was the "powertrain applications manager". Semiconductor company who made all sort of electronic IC's for automotive customers.

We are just starting to see the transition from old hydraulic systems to modern electronic ones. Pretty cool time to be involved (1990s).

So I had a team of six engineers, and I started going through how automatics functioned. Six bored engineers, eyes glazed over, thought screw this we need a hands-on class. So told the team Friday was at my house for hands-on. I had gotten a Ford, Chevy transmission. It was a good way to explain a shift body, bands, planetary gears, so on. Told everyone to wear their worst clothes that day. Something that could toss away.

We tore done each one, showing one-way valves (ball bearings) how you could flow a lot one way, bleed the other way (slow-release). Pressure modulation, so on.

We had fun, but the whole team understood functions, shift bodies, how transmissions worked, etc. Then we brainstormed how to use solenoids to move the circuits around. I worked for Bosch in the 1980s and Mercedes had done the "retard spark for split second to reduce maximum torque" allowing a smaller transmission to be used with big V8's.

Oh, burnt transmission fluid stinks to high heaven. A putrid smell, to the point you want to burn what clothes you were wearing. The smell didn't bother me, little did I realize the loss of smell meant other medical issues.

    FEW

    if U did repairable damage

more than likely there would be noticeable symptons

    maybe grinding

    faulty shifting

reluctance to go into park or drive

in the future be certain to movr to park deliberately..................vehicle not n a bind
( Uv notice it moves a hair & settles )

No less from now on U MUST use the E brake each & every time or U might get a ‘ Roll Off ‘ !!!!!!

IF the Park detent does not hold

OP drops this for his second post...then disappears for two days. Hope he didn't try to drive his truck again with no brakes!

0204211023_HDR.jpgthis is from a 4runner that got thrown in reverse while doing 30mph. Guy at work did it, said accelerator got "stuck" and he panicked and went past neutral into reverse.

Wow. I can just imagine the tire smoke. I thought you couldn't do that with the newer vehicles?

Fyi, you can throw a late model crown vic into reverse at highway speeds.

Not only do you not break anything, you do huge burnouts.

That's weird because I did the same thing to my 99 Prerunner many years back, going about 40mph (see my last post), jumped neutral and put it in reverse. It sounded awful, stalled the truck but it started up just fine and worked great for 2 more years until I sold it.

Maybe the rear diff gave out on the next guy though, who knows. Don't buy used cars from 19 year olds lol.

I wasnt in the truck when it happened so I have no idea what he did but I dont know how fluid pressure alone could hold that transmission in reverse while the rear end fought for its life

Yeah it could have caused damage I just didn't know about, one things for sure - it sounded real bad and I thought for sure I had destroyed something. 10/10 would not recommend doing it.

ONLY if you turn the key all the way to allow removal of the key.

The engine CAN BE shut off WITHOUT locking the steering column. Just one position back from the "RUN" position.

You know, if I could go back in time, I would tear into the very first one that ever began to slip on me.
So many rebuilt transmissions that didn't last 50-75K after the 'rebuild'. (or exchange, as it usually was)
I don't know what's inside them to this day, but I know it must be tempting to cut corners when you're fixing one.

I grew up with greasy hands, but none of my wrench slinging redneck friends could explain the magic that
went on inside that aluminum case. Far as I knew there was only one place on earth they could only be repaired,
and that was inside the seedy confines of the local 'Transmission Shop'. lol
