Any woodworkers?

I picked up a harbor freight spray gun to do a little experimenting with spraying water based polyurethane. I know it's a cheap gun but it actually gets pretty good reviews so I thought I would try it out and see how it works. I hope to give this a test over the holliday weekend. But first thing is wash and wax the taco!

 

I tried one of those for latex with very mixed results. Water based poly may be a pretty good use for it though. The supplied regulator gave me a lot of issues, and I would suggest some kind of dryer like one of the disposable ones. Just my 2 cents! Good Luck!

I've been using it more and more, there is a learning curve to it. You do have to sand after the first coat because it does raise the grain. I have used it on table tops and some window sills in my home as well as a shoe cubby and its held up well. What I really like about it is the very fast dry time, you can recoat in 30 minutes to an hour. I can a completly get a finish on in a day, 3 or 4 coats usually does it. Another thing is very little odor and it's not flammable so it's safe to use indoors. Waterbased poly has come a long way over the years. I've been using varathane and minwax, but I also want to try general finishes brand as well. Another cool thing about it is it's very clear and doesnt change the color of the wood or whatever stain you use. And I have applied it over an oil based stain, you just need to let it dry for about 24 hours before you do. And you dont have to worry about oily rags in your shop and the danger of fire that carries. Clean up is with warm water. The only real downside to it for me is the cost, its double what oil based products are.

 

I am in the same boat right now. Just picked up a can of the water based poly and am extremely happy for all the same reasons you just mentioned. Dry time is fantastic, cleanup is far easier, appearance is great and the fact that you can stain natural wood without a yellow undertone is awesome.

 

I used a satin water-based poly on this and it's holding up nicely.

 

I dont know if I would use it on outdoor furniture. I dont know if it would hold up like a spar varnish.

 

Waterborne finishes have come a long way recently. I always made my wipe on oil poly but tried some Target Coatings EM2000 on a recent project and was very happy with the results. https://www.targetcoatings.com/shop/water-based-varnishes/
Since most WB don't have that nice amber tint to them I first sprayed a coat of Seal Coat shellac. That gave it the warm amber colour that oil poly does. With a very light sand between coats the finish was very smooth.

All the stuff on the ground in front of the stack is from a trade I did with some friends in Texas. I brought Walnut down on a trip and came home with Mesquite

 

Mesquite logs make beautiful turnings.

And then you can soak the chips in water and put them in your BBQ for some added flavor.
