So you are saying if I get a 6 inch lift I can’t run bigger tires? Sounds like BS. If the body sits higher (lift), then the tires don’t rub on fender/mudguards. I understand that under full compression a 1-2 inch lift is not going to clear much if any more, but how many of us are doing that? I’m not, never have, highly likely I never will under normal driving conditions.

 

When one person (or Tacoma) loves another they may develop a special bond. They may begin to form a physical relationship that includes touching of tires or tailgates. This touching is called “rubbing”

 

A 6” lift is a drop bracket lift that requires cutting the cross member and bolting and welding in new suspension components which changes the geometry of stock suspension. These are typically undesirable and the minority of lifts.

Your standard lifts use stock geometry which is nothing more than pushing your suspension down. That’s why these lifts actually reduce your droop from stock ride height and provide not benefit to tire fitment. A 1-2” coil over lift has the same compression and extension limits of a stock strut.

Now that being said, why do you think the trucks with 6” lifts run the same size tires as the guys with 2”lifts?

 

255 85 16 , 33" tire will fit no rub . Run them on my TRD off road . Stock suspension

Ok let me rephrase it :

What ever your tire rubs on now, it will still rub on that same spot with a lift. Maybe not as often as it sits in your driveway or in the Starbucks drive through. Just because you decided to drive around town with zero down travel ("wait , what's travel ?") on your gnar ganr lift that can supposedly "fit 35's with no rubbing "... doesn't mean that it's wont rub when you actually decide to use your truck, or even turn the steering wheel over speed bumps. Also neverminded your poor CVs ("wait, what's a CV").


Many such misconceptions. Typically amongst dudes that traded their WRX in for a Tacoma. "I don't know , I just always wanted wanted one...they look so aggressive .. ya know? Ya I off road it, I was in this dirt field behind Walmart doing doughnuts and it was super capable off road. Think I'm going to get some raptor lights and a PRO grill next to improve the powers"

 

Yeah, true, but whatever lift you have 1, 2, 3 inches, you would have to compress an additional 1, 2, or 3 inches over what you did before the lift to rub in the same spot.

 

You do understand that the full range of suspension droop and compression is traveled regularly, right? Lift simply "props" the suspension up within the given range and does not reduce or change the ability to reach full compression (unless you have a shitty spacer that takes the shock out of range, causing bottom out before bump). Whether or not you start at any point 1, 2, or 3" within that range, it will still reach full bump all the same.

 

Not really statistically significant, but I did a poll on this before I got my new tires. TL;DR: About a third of the respondents said 285/75/16 required a CMC. Very few had no rubbing issues. I ended up going 265/75/16.

285/75/16 on my 2020 TRD Pro. Only slight rubbing at full crank during impact. No rubbing daily driving. Will be getting the new springs from Eibach once they're released to eliminate the minimal rubbing.

 

I had a 3in front and 2in rear 285/75/16 km3's and never once rubbed anywhere flex or not and locked either direction in 4wd . Never needed to do cab mount chop
