Everything about this echos my sentiments exactly. From low milage rebuilds to seedy shops.

    u aint seen nuthin yet

from the era of straight cut trans & no synchros when the driver had to ‘ double clutch ‘

to the PowerGlide 2 speed auto

to the now latest techno marvels 7.....8 ...9 ..10 speed dual clutch trans

or the CVT ( constant velocity trans )

    few drivers

even fewer line techs understand them let alone being Proficient at diagnostics or repair

aint going to be cheap ..........................

...step 2a: Shift to lower gear (assuming not braking in emergency situation), to slow vehicle while continuing pumping brakes.

I tried on one, didn't work...apparently they disengage the actuator when a certain speed is reached. I had a conversation a while back and the discussion was,"...if you service your brakes, the lines won't fail...(blah, blah, blah)..." Also was reminder they are no longer "emergency brakes".

Still seems dumb to me to change a basic emergency device for the sake of saving space in the cockpit.

If you hold the electric parking break lever it will apply the brakes at any speed to my understanding and as soon as you release it, back to normal or until you reach 0mph in which case it latches the brake in.

hmmm...thought most cars were designed with logic to prevent this from happening. I had an '87 Nissan Maxima GXE that a passenger (ahem...my sister...ahem) threw into reverse going 45. It just shut off, still rolling at 45. I put it in neutral, turned the key and started it, back to drive. Never got below 40 mph. Drove that car for another 7 years, never a problem.

Im with you guys, how the hell did this happen, but I helped remove the third member myself and ill I can say is that transmission in that 4runner is a strong mofo, whether it was in park or reverse

Soooooo, what's the consensus? We have:
    1. Story is real, brakes went out, he panicked. Or
    2. He accidentally put the truck in park at a low speed. High speed it just clicks with no damage.

I am betting on #2 because
    A. Brakes very rarely go "out" on a modern car and they had to reach over the e brake to put it in park and
    B. Brake lines going bad? On a 3 year old?

On Youtube, I love watching Precision Transmission. All they do is Chevy, Ford, Dodge. Still love watching their videos as it's interesting to hear Richard's insight.

I'd love to tear down a Tacoma Automatic to see what that mechanical shift rod (it goes through the transmission, the switch on the other side of the rod tells the dash & computer what you selected. It's an odd hybrid of old-school and modern electronics. I am guessing allow for the limp mode to drive to the dealership. Some manufactures: electronics die, nothing happens you tow it to the dealership.

Toyota's design philosophy is "if in the middle of a Sahara, you still need to get home," hence limp modes (reduced power, but you still are moving under your own power). Land Cruiser Legacy.

If anyone around Austin, TX finds a dead Tacoma Automatic, bring it over to my house for a "lunch and learn." I'm curious but core fees are expensive. Not tearing down my 2021 Transmission just yet.

@gearcruncher might have beta onna teardown vid on YouTube maybe. He posted a video a while back about a seminar on the AC60 that was pretty cool. Basically outlining all the features, but not to the layman. To trans techs.

I've watched a few of their videos, but after about 10 or so I was like this isn't interesting anymore. The guy knows his shit.

Those talking about multi zoned brakes in case of failure, I’m calling BS. Maybe my truck is too old. I did my first shakedown on my long travel today and I lost brakes. Used my brake line as a limiting strap, bending my banjo bolt to where it was puking brake fluid. Press the brake and straight to the floor it went.

luckily I was on private property and only going 10ish mph but pumping the brakes did absolutely nothing. Used the e brake to stop myself.

same here, Replaced my brakes and when changing the fluid my power bleeder had a leak in the feed hose so i pumped my brake lines full of air took it out of the garage and no brakes nothing. Didnt even bother pumping just pulled the E brake and it stopped fine. No amount of pumping matters when you have air in the system.

Broke a rear brake line on a 90 Grand Wagoneer a couple years ago while parked in an Auto Zone parking lot. Came out and there was a puddle of brake fluid on the ground. Went straight back in to purchase some brake line and a flaring tool. Probably shouldn't have driven it, but it was only a mile or so. No rear brakes, fronts worked fine. Brake resovoir was split to prevent losing all the fluid. Haven't dug into the Tacoma, but it wouldn't be unheard of.

I'll have to take a look in the morning.

I would've power braked that wagoneer to within an inch of it's life at every stop sign/light on the way home lol.

Best way to do that (if you're stopped and u know it) is to just pinch off that line w vise grips or something. Drive it home w 3 brakes.
