You should really define “way more”……10%? 20%? What percent is acceptable? What percent of total engine production would make you recommend all Tacoma buyers only consider the 4cyl due to the V6 being problematic?

See…….as poor as my data points might be, I did try to objectively quantify my claim that the engine is solid. I arrive at a .004% failure rate from bad engines. From you, all we get is “lots of issues”.

Anyways……no harm no foul. Just spitballing here, and it’s all good either way.

Yeah well your humor is without fault thats for sure, your quiet engine post had me laughing :D
I recommend folks buy the engine they want in their Tacoma as I’ve said I think both are generally reliable. Just pointed out that on the third gen forum I’ve seen more issues on TW with the V6 than the I4 and posted links to that. I stand by that statement. Never said “lots Of issues” lol

Toyota should put heavier springs on the SR utility package. Every Terminix truck I see on the road is squatting.

Toyota knows those trucks are going to be used to carry some weight.

Hmmm… I’ve had right at a thousand pound load in mine and it did fine. Of course it’s going to drop a little with that weight but it wasn’t bad. My payload rating is 1500 lbs.

These trucks have a fiberglass cap and what ever they carry in there. The constant load has the trucks sitting higher in the front. Not like they are on the bump stops. Could be the lack of a transfer case, unless those trucks are 4WD which is unlikely.

Good points. And with tanks for pesticides that’s likely a huge weight as well.

That's the high pressure fuel pump chirp. Easily addressed by tsb that exists for this problem.

Injector cleaning cycle can do it occasionally as well. It's really not a big deal like you 4 cylinder guys are making it out as.

Isn't the 3.5L V6 also used in other Toyota/Lexus products? So if you are looking for lemons perhaps they show up in other models as well...or not.

The basic engine structure of the 3.5L has appeared in many models over the years. In the Tacoma, we get the faux/simulated Atkinson cycle, but generally yeah, it’s an established platform that has been used in Lexus products and minivans of course!

I read through the posts. I had a 2003 6 cylinder TRD now my 2016 has a 4cyl I knew I was getting less power power, lower haul weight. I made a decision to get the sr5 4 cyl 4wdr access cab. I’ll haul a load of firewood 2-3 times a year but usually just golf clubs and trips to HD or Lowe’s and kayaks during the summer. With all this said if you chose a 4cyl don’t complain… maybe a Ford F-150 or 6 cyl TRD. You buy chuck steak and complain it’s not sirloin you get what you pay for. Learn to be happy with your choices or make better ones.

As a master tech I have many hours wrenching on both the 4 and the six. The 4 will run forever with minimal issues if any. The 6 has some issues... and they could get expensive. Would not want to own a 6 with 200k on it. I’d own a 4 with 300k plus. Just purely on cost of ownership the 4 wins...

I am both a Honda/Acura master tech and Toyota Master tech. Honda has issues with their 6... oil consumption being just one and their 4 is bullet proof. Why do u think everyone is going to turbo 4.

    check out my mod list.
I have a switch that controls the throttle.
With my upgrades it feels like a v6 and is quick.

With the fuel saver mode I can run my 4 cylinder to it maximum capability and the great part is I fill every 2 weeks (that’s the mode I keep it in since gas is high rn, usually I’m in sport at all times and that gives me quicker acceleration but consumes more fuel doing so.)
