You don't even need to be into heavy duty off-roading to actually use that locker. All it will take is that one time you are stuck in snow, mud, beach driving or trying to pull a boat out on a slippery dock to realize your truck is actually a 2 wheel drive (despite saying "4x4"). Biggest regret in life was not getting the TRD Off-Road. All other trims "sport" or "pro" are BS gimmicks for people who don't know what the score is. However, if a TRD Off road is only $1-2k more than say a sport or SR5 get it. An air locker installed or aftermarket e-locker will run that much if not more, and won't be warrantied or good to go from factory.

If you are looking at serious off-road, you are looking at the wrong vehicle to start with. There I said it.

My thoughts exactly! There's nothing wrong with the sport. The OR is just better.

For real! And then I remember that most of the people on here hyping the off-road camp at spots next to minivans or paved rv parks.

I recently had this dilema, I went with the OR for the same reasons alot have said above. The scoop is non-functional which I didn't like, also in previous trucks I have had use out of the rear locker. Not so much with the crawl control, but I'm going to try them out soon.

I’ve had both and I’ll take my Sport over the OR. Had my 2017 OR for 2 years and never needed the locker or crawl control. Suspension was squishy and nose dived with the slightest touch of the brakes. Also, the ORs I’ve driven are the only ones I’ve noticed the rear diff howl. None of the Sports or SR5s or SRs or Limiteds had it.

I’m also realistic with what I use the truck for. It’s my daily driver and it goes off road to get to fishing spots and such. The Sport handles better on road and I like the scoop. If I want to do any serious off roading, I’m taking the side by side or atv. Way more fun and less expensive if I break stuff.

TW will convince you that you must have the locker or you’ll die the first time you leave the pavement. Even though most ORs sold won’t see anything worse than a speed bump at Home Depot.

Don't want to get too much dirt on your tire dressing.

Like an offshore boat that only fishes inshore.

I'm glad to see the Sport owners finally showed up to justify their poor choice in trims.

Getting that skewp in important, even if it means no locker and a wheel a tire set that will come off on the 2nd day of ownership

    Like, so many.
I’ve had both. As I was modding my Sport I realized I was making it like an OR. I do miss the scoop though. I hope to have scooped hood one day.

Why do people keep saying the skewp is non-functional? I was able to make mine serve a purpose!

Love my sport and I haven’t needed a locker or crawl control yet. I picked this up for a great deal when someone traded it in with 800 miles on it… That said, I probably would have gone with an OR if they had one at the time for a similar deal. In my situation, the price difference between the sport and the OR was more significant and it wasn’t worth it. Normally though, I’d rather have something and not need it than need it and not have it.

Sorry it took so long. I was at the mall watching enviously as OR owners used their lockers to park with one wheel on the curb.

Don't let Tacoma world convince you of what YOU NEED. Please make the decision yourself without outside influences.

I choose my Sport over off-road because my tacoma spends 99.9% on road, thus I want the stiffer suspension system for much better on road characteristics.
Off-road was too soft for my taste, plus nose dive was definitely not my cup of tea.
I have no plans to change suspensions at all.

If or when I'll ever need off road driving conditions, 4x4 will be plenty for my needs.

    Good luck on your choices!
