Hi, I would like to install headers, y-pipe, and maybe keep TRD cat back and add a vibrant resonator on my truck that is for strictly off-road purposes in Mexico. If the maximum power I ever plan to put through my engine is TRD injectors w/supercharger, what is the quietest header/y-pipe/exhaust that I can go for while letting engine breath. I don’t mind keeping or losing cats.I also would like to know opinions on the cross over before or after the t-case is better for part longevity, like the actuator. I have a manual 4.0 litre, thank you.

currently thinking a roost factor pipe with some kinda stainless headers.

What do you need a fast super reliable yet quiet off-road exclusive truck for?

    You drug running?

Headers and deleting cats opening up the exhaust etc all lead to more noise, period.

URD's are true equal length IIRC so they may sound smoother but you're going to get more tailpipe noise as well as ticking in the cab from headers.

URD also as a matching Y pipe for their headers.

Generally speaking for reliability it's best to have an after the transfer case cross over and do the FJ case manual transfer case mod to eliminate the vulnerable actuator motor and simplify electronics reducing failure points.

As for after that you're going to need a lot of mufflers and bends to quiet the noise which in part will negate the benefits of opening up the exhaust at the beginning and slow down scavenging.

Not sure you can have your cake and eat it too on this one.

:D LOL I just would like to sound as quiet as reasonably possible when rolling around other camp sites, drug aficionados, etc. FJ mod is so tempting but I can’t justify it with my functioning 2Lo module and 4x4 system atm.

Do you think keeping the cats or adding resonators somewhere can help?

edit: and do you think the TRD cat back exhaust would be enough flow?

I have Doug Thorley headers, cats, and the TRD exhaust, stock Y pipe, I think my truck sounds good without being loud or obnoxious but it's definitely louder than stock, even at idle. Skip @ ovrlndkull still thinks it's obnoxious though, even at idle.

The stock exhaust is "enough" flow, more than enough really the 4.7l tundra has a much smaller exhaust from factory and does just fine.

The TRD (Bosal) uses the same diameter tube as stock but is a slightly better quality of metal and has less baffling in the muffler thus slightly more direct path but obviously the trade off is more noise.

Keeping the cats will definitely help but they do restrict flow to a small degree, Doughnut Media did a episode of Money Pit and going from a full cast iron manifold and stock 30 year old exhaust managed to gain a whopping like 3hp with full long tube headers cat delete and 3" down pipe on their Miata.

I suspect you would see at most 5hp and +10-15 decibels with headers and an open exhaust with no cats given how much more engineering has advanced from 1990 to 2005 when they first starting making 2nd gens.

the equal length headers alone dyno above 20 hp and torque. roostfactor pipe is equally important. a decent muffler, cat, and resinator works great. i have the roostfactor #1 prototype with all the above. highly reccommended. helped me to 380rwhp
