After I plasti dipped it black I don’t have any glare problems. I’m guessing that’s a reason the pro comes with a black scoop (and it looks awesome!). This is from before I dipped it and it doesn’t really capture how bad the glare can be:

I found that "Off Road or Sport" wasn't really a choice available to me. In order to get the combination of features I wanted (manual transmission Access Cab 4x4 V6 in Army Green), I was forced to get the TRD Sport.

So, go to the Toyota website and put in your features first. You may find that the final model is pre-ordained for you.

Please let me know where this is so I can trade in my truck this afternoon. In Canada the Pro is a $10K step up from a premium Sport or OR.

I would take a notchy manual transmission from a 70's tractor over a nice smooth automatic any day!

It's far more likely you just can't admit you choose poorly in both trim and transmission.

Sounds like you wont need a locker, i use my 4x4 sr5 on forest service roads every week and it hasnt failed me. I say go Sport with aggressive all terrains and you’ll be good

If that makes you happy and able to sleep at night, I know I haven’t lost any sleep over my truck purchase. Now my attempt at buying a Desert Armor tent, that’s a different story

I had a 2nd gen OR for @10 years. Never used any of the options such as the locker as Im 99% on road. I went with a Sport Premium for my ‘21. I am embarrassed by the non functioning hood skewp, other than that Ive had 300 wonderful miles so far.

Depends how smooth the roads are where you live, lots of broken and washboard pavement around here and l found the Sport too harsh. It's best to test drive both to find out what is best for each person and situation.

Before I say anything else I'll say that all your points are valid and as a manual diehard who often wishes for a little more bed space I can't fault anyone for going for a Sport to have the MT and ACLB combo(I can fault Toyota for not offering the OR with that combo. I mean literally what possible reason is there? I get not offering the DCLB manual because there would be some extra engineering work for a niche offering but the ACLB and DCSB are just different cabs and beds on the exact same vehicle).

However, assuming OP isn't after that combo, which seems like a safe assumption given the take rate for both MTs and ACs, at the end of the day the OR gives you a lot more substance for your dollar. It's probably true that most ORs don't see much more than a speed bump or a gravel road but that doesn't mean there isn't a large minority of us that really do wheel them and I will say that out on the trails Wranglers are the only vehicle I come across more often than Tacomas. When I bought my first 4x4, a second gen 4Runner, I sounded exactly like OP. I may have had some interest in technical off roading but mostly was looking for a vehicle to get out on forest roads and take me skiing, hell I almost bought an Outback instead. But the off road bug did bite and bit hard. ATVs do look fun, but many of us don't have the space for one and as someone who loves long-distnace backcountry exploration they wouldn't really fit for what I like.

Point being, assuming OP isn't specifically after an ACLB with a stick I just don't see any way around the fact that the OR is the much better deal.

That dude keeps repeating “poor choice” over & over, which only proves that he knows plenty about making poor choices. & I’m still not sure how it applies to you or me or anyone else. Just like you, I also made the best choice for me. Sucks for that guy, though.
