I was going to tell you this. Basically any tacoma on a lot is already sold, just not picked up. There simply are none.

If you've decided this is something you want to do then do your calculations and line up your financing, then expand your search area as far as dealerships go and see if you can locate something you like. If you do be ready to pull the trigger right then and there. It's that kind of market for these things.

This is my line of thinking. This market is perfect to do these kind of trades!

Just do it. Chances are if this economy stays the same will be able to get more for your new truck as well. I would trade for a new Ridgeline for $5,000 total out-of-pocket. And I'm on and I have a 2020 but I would pay $5,000 for a 2021 and could have got the 21 for 3,000 but like Toyota Honda selling every Ridgeline make right now. My dealer only has one they're all selling for MSRP

When I've gone car shopping I found that KBB is a lot closer to what I actually get than NADA. I usually get the KBB average trade-in or a bit better.

    OP,

It is not a terrible idea to do what you are doing ... in fact, under some circumstances, it could be a very smart play. I can't say for sure what you should do because I don't know your personal financial situation, what you really want versus what you really need, etc.

But I will say this. If you have the time, it makes perfect sense to go at lease structure a deal to see where you end up. On paper. Not speculation. Not talk. Not a handshake but the actual paperwork. I find talking deal strategy -- which I find actually fun -- changes a lot when I have the cold, hard numbers in front of me. Nothing wrong with what you are doing at all. Maybe the total out of pocket is $3K. I would say go for it, but that is just me. But maybe it is actually $5K. Or $7K. There is a point the deal is a no brainer and a point where its a bad deal. Good fun and totally worth it to a) know where you are on the continuum in terms of your own comfort and b) where you are in reality based on the numbers for your actual truck.

I usually buy and keep my Tacoma for 10 years before I even think about whether or not I want to trade it. However, I took my 2020 TRD OR in for the 10K mile service and they offered me $4,400 more than I paid for it (granted, I bought before the pandemic). I told them I was fine -- not worth trading with only 10,000 miles but if they wanted to put a great deal on paper for a 2021 Tundra I would consider it. But I told them I don't want to talk about it. Put the best deal on paper, send it to me and I will think about it. They have not responded just yet ...

Best of luck to you. Please post back here on what you decide. I am really curious to hear how it works out ... But remember ... your strategy and your decisions should be based on the actual deal not the speculation of the deal ...

    :)

For what it’s worth I’ve considered this at least a dozen times in the last month. My truck is almost paid off, I end up paying another $6k or so on top for the truck I want. At $500 a month, that’s another year worth of payments. Maybe your financial situation is awesome. I don’t know you.

but in the end I would pay an additional $6k and when I want to trade in the new truck I would lose at least another $6k so that’s a grand total of $12k lost, and for what? That $12k buys me a few motorcycles or even a nice weekend car.

Buys one helluva vacation too if you’re into that sort of thing.

Please tell me where you buy your motorcycles that $12k would buy you a few. I want to go there! :) Would cover about half the cost of my Goldwing.

    3k!?

    i would for 5k ! :)

if you decide to sell/trade later the 2021 will be worth more than 2019 (with +40k extra miles) so you might actually get the 3k back later (?)

idk im new to TW :)

Didn't read the replies, but if you can trade from a 50k mile truck to new, same trim and options, for $3k, do it. I doubt it works out that way, but best wishes.
