If this is something you're not sure you're going to stick with, my advice would be to start small and cheap. I grew up with dirt bikes and they were usually 20-30 years old, my current bike is a '99 DR350 and I'm pretty sure it will survive the next apocalypse. Even an old beater bike will be a ton of fun, you can always upgrade if you want something newer and faster.

i 'third' the XR route...XR50 for the kid, a 250 for yourself (or 400 depending on your size/skill).
    cheap, reliable, easy to maintain.

don't forget the gear...folks go spending money on bikes and gear is an after thought....
you can get good deals on used stuff on CL.
a new helmet is worth the money.

Get a couple used bikes from some dad who bought them a few years ago and their wimpy ass kid still prefers Xbox. You’ll get them for 30% and if you fuck em up no one will care.

    Amen!!!
4 knee surgery’s. 3 wrist surgery’s. 4 broken bones. 2 compressed vertebrae. 1 overnight stay in the ICU. 2 concussions on record. And a cracked sternum.

Still riding to this day. A lot less and a lot slower but still able to put in a few hot laps.
