Yes but it’s not enforced as much or hard as the HAM is. I know a bunch of guys that have been running GMRS radios for years without a license. A few have even spoke to DNR and park services up at flag pole about using GMRS radios without a license. And they were told by them that they don’t care as long as you’re not being stupid. They are supposed to drop the fee down to $35 for 10 years. Once that happens I’ll pick up my license until then I will not spend $70 for it.

I mean if I used my radio every day or lived out west I would’ve picked up the license right away. But I’m not spending $70 to find out that I’m not gonna use this radio but a handful of times a year. After just dropping $175 for a radio. Plus I’d really be kicking myself in butt if I would’ve spent $70 and they drop the fee down to $35

Man I thought the price was supposed to drop in April, that sucks. I want to get a nicer GMRS radio for more range than my little FRS guys, but they still work great to hear front to back in a group in the woods.

@Scrovak FRS can communicate with GMRS and vice versa, but FRS doesn't need a license because they're low powered. Limited range, but always been fine for rear to front of a group. There are some GMRS channels that FRS cannot communicate with, but everyone I've been with has used a shared FRS/GMRS channels

@Scrovak I have also been using my GMRS radio without a license for a few weeks. Radio works right out of box without a license.

What, no government mandated slot to stick you license into for the radio to work? Madness! Chaos! This will be the demise of democracy! Charging private citizens for the right to communicate on radios they legally purchased is the keystone to freedom! How are we supposed to track you under the expanded Patriot Act laws that just got passed?!? Time to start a new branch of government to investigate this!

I would stick with the GMRS. And a pair or them are cheaper then the ones you are looking at on Amazon.

    Good news everyone!

I thought I might have something functional in my home inventory so I took a look at my electronics box, and remembered acquiring these guys from an old position a while back:

    https://www.ebay.com/p/112049964

Motorola MS350R Waterproof hand-held radios. I have a pair, and a charging dock. And they're GMRS.

Looks like these might work? Now I just need to see if I want to get a handmic lol

I do have a pair. They're charging now so I can see if the batteries are any good. If so, you're welcome to use one of them for the trip, see if you like them. They're an older model, replaced by the T600 or some other machine lol

Ohh, that might work too… I’ll have to think about it, as it might not be a bad idea for me to get my own set even if their only used once in a while.
