    Hi all,

I'm looking to buy an 06 Tacoma reg cab that the seller says has some kind of head/head gasket issue. It's a 2.7L automatic and has 145k on it, I'm looking to buy it to fix and sell it. He has is listed as "needing an engine" but doesn't know much about cars.

Is there something that could go so wrong with the head or head gasket on a 2TR-FE engine that would require needing a whole engine replacement? I've been rebuilding motors for a while now and short of a rod sticking through the block you can usually rebuild an engine. I didn't think these engines usually had head gasket issues, so not sure what happened. I will be looking at the truck tomorrow morning (7/9) so I just wanted to see what everyone thought.

    Thanks!

Yes. A cracked block will equal a new engine.
I would start with a leak down test.

Did they just machine the head and throw on a new head gasket?

Sometimes it makes more sense to replace with a used, low mileage engine. Instead of rebuilding. Since you want to flip it, that may not be cost effective for you.

I was lucky and didn’t warp my heads, so for me, it was just swapping gaskets

So pretty sure it just needs a head gasket. It runs ok but starts to heat up quick. No obvious oil or coolant leaks from the block that would suggest a cracked block. I think people were telling him it needs an engine to get the price down. Either way he wants too much money, he has it listed for $4k and said fhe lowest he would go is $3600. The blue book value is like $7k
