By way of full disclosure, the only thing this has to do with my Taco is that it's the dealer where I bought it, as well as my wife's 2019 Prius. I brought the latter in for a 45k service today and had to deal with a different service writer than usual, as my usual one had no Saturday appointments available. About an hour after I dropped it off my phone rang. It was the service writer. He said they found a nail in one of her tires and recommended it be patched for $29. Ok, no problem I said, do it. Then he proceeds to tell me the other thing he recommends is a fuel injector service which they recommend every 25k miles. The best part? It costs $194. I know you will find this hard to believe, but I don't recall reading the words injector or throttle body cleaning anywhere in the Toyota maintenance guide for her car. Go figure. It must be that their exhaust gas venting system was malfunctioning today, and since he is inside all day the gas was affecting his brain.

Upselling is typical of ANY shop.....even the quickie lube places.

Just say no to any service you don't want.

Remember, they are in business to make $$.

As a follow up to the injector service at 25K, when you pick up the car. Ask the Service Manager to show you the service in the Service Manual or the Owner's Manual. If its true, tell him you will schedule the work in the future. Pay the current service invoice and walk away.

This should politely call him out on the BS.

Were you having performance issues or was it preventive?

They gave me the option for what I wanted done for my 30k service and had their normal things. I had only had the truck for 15k miles at that point so I had them do everything they recommended. Definitely no issues but I figured I'm planning on having this truck for a long time so preventative maintenance never hurts. Especially for how much I drive.

Welcome to the "new" way dealers make their money since they don't have cars to sell.
Even if it's under warranty, they get to bill Toyota for the charges.

I know it was a stretch. In my defense I did start out with full disclosure. My apologies if I cranked anyone up.

Toyota dealers are the worst with this. I’ve owned many different types of vehicles and never had to worry about bs upsell or services charged for that weren’t performed. The Toyota dealer by me constantly doesn’t do things or messes things up and then try’s to charge the customer. I wrench and know what’s what. But feel bad for the 95% off customers that just pay cause it’s the dealer. Every time I have gotten a service I hear them telling another customer they need abcd on a newer vehicle. And people more often then not pay it. Mine literally tried to charge me 85$ to adjust my rear brake for inspection. A warranty item. I’ve told them twice the e brake sticks and needs 4l to undo work scheduled services. Said they fixed it this and still doesn’t work. Toyota corporate doesn’t care. GL
