Do these trucks have a 100 mile reserve or something? My Tacoma gets around 18-19 mpg but for some reason every time I fill up it only gives me 260 to empty. I have manually checked it myself to make sure the MPG is correct on the dash and it’s dead on. 18 mpg on a 21 gallon tank should be around 380 till empty. Anyways just curious

Does the DTE change as you drive on that tank? It should re-compute.

I'm not sure of the algorithm it's using to make that computation so I really can't give an intelligent answer. My guess is, however, that's using the MPG from the last tank rather than your average MPG over time that you are looking at. If you did mostly city driving, sat in traffic, etc, the MPG on that last tank might not have been great, hence the low DTE when you fill. Like I said, totally spitballing here. Hopefully someone can give a more educated answer.

Yea I get that and it’s really no big deal either way. I was just thinking about it and it had me curious as hell.

I have 7k miles on mine and I fill up and my DTE usually reads around 350-360 but when I track it manually it actually ends up closer to 365-375 per tank. Some days I drive like Miss Daisy... other days like Dale...

That's funny when I fill up mine always says 380 til empty. But I'll use the trip for each tank i'm getting around 450 miles before needing to refill. The most gas i've ever got was 18.5 gallons

Momma told me to never let the tank get under 1/4. Keep it full as possible to reduce condensation and such.
Plus, when a comet hits the planet and you need an apocalypse vehicle you won't have to worry about gas
stations not working. Sound advice. I'm by no means a prepper but I am ready to go at a moments notice.

you have around three gallons left in the tank when the truck says empty and it goes to zero. Why? To protect dumb asses from themselves.

I recall owners manual says 2.5 gallons left when the counter reads empty. That tracks almost perfectly with what ive seen. Not a problem for me now that I know that.
When my Audi says zero, its zero! better not screw around and get gas. Darn Germans

If the bottom is -2.5 gal then you’re never running it “dry” if you’re filling up at 0 miles left.

When my Tacoma was stock and was running the stock size 245/75r16 tires, I was getting a fuel range of about 360 miles driving from Albuquerque to Colorado Springs regularly.

It just depends on your driving habits. Mine will typically fluctuate between 385 and 416 at full. After about 1/4 tank though it drops at a much faster rate which I believe is likely to ensure you get to a gas station quickly even though there's still plenty of reserve left. I actually ran my truck down to 4 miles until empty once and only put 18.5 gallons in before it was full.

Keep in mind it is only an estimate. It can go down faster or slower than your odometer is reading based on your driving.

Mine showed around 380 on the first tank from the dealership but I ended up getting like 320 out of 18 gallons - wtf? Is it just a breaking in period or have I perhaps been too heavy on the pedal?

That sounds about right. You’re getting about 17.78 mpg. The Tacoma has a 21.1 gallon fuel tank which gets it approximately a 360 mile fuel range depending on driving conditions.

Lots of variables play into mpg. Climate, altitude, city, highway, hills, flat roads, tire size, lift, weight on the truck, driving habits, etc. I get on average about 15-18 mpg with city driving.
