apologies I know this is covered elsewhere - but I havent found it

    I'm currently stock 2.7 AC 4wd

about to size up in tires to 265/75/16

also have some body armor ordered and think I will want to do 6112's and AAL/5100 or 5160 to stiffen things up with the added weight and gain some clearance

Will the 6112's at any perch allow me to get a larger tire size than 265/75/16?

I need tires soon, but if the bilsteins allow me to have a larger size, perhaps I should wait until everything is installed to buy tires? or is 265/75/16 the right size any way you slice it

    thank you! love you all

I also have a 2.7L 3rd gen and have done countless hours of research while I wait for my current tires to wear out before I upgrade. From the research I've done, going up to 265/75/16 will be easy with no rubbing issues and fills out the wheel well nicely and will look good. The shocks that you mentioned are good and will be able to support the added armor and weight. The 4 cyl will be happier with this set up also.

You can also size up to a 285/75/16 with minor trimming. Having the proper wheel offset is the trick to getting those tires to fit without doing a cab mount chop (CMC), just minor trimming of the fender liner. Set the shock perch to around 2-3 inches of lift and it will look awesome. The 4 cyl will be slower because of the rolling resistance of the tires and the added weight of the bigger tires, plus the weight of the armor. From what I hear, it's not bad. Just step on the gas and it will go. You can regear to help with the power loss if it's in the budget.

It all depends on your budget. You can get the 265/75/16 tires now with stock everything and will be fine, even with the armor. Then add the shocks when you get them, and 285/75/16 tires after that if you want to go bigger. Hope this helps.

You could also look at a 255/75 or 255/80 which should fit with either no rubbing or minor rubbing at stock height.

this is great - thank you. Incredible how deep the rabbit hole goes on this stuff. I've been researching tire sizes for so long that in the meantime, I've somehow talked myself into buying a new bumper and a new skid plate that were not even considerations when I first started looking at upgrading the tires. And now I'm thinking, well the truck has 105k miles with the stock suspension...I'm adding a considerable amount of weight w the bumper and skid plate...maybe it makes sense to upgrade the suspension...which maybe means I should rethink the tire size if Im going to be in a situation where adding 2" of lift is possible. All the while staying cognizant of the fact I have a 2.7l engine and need to keep added weight to a minimum.

And around and around we go. My wife has been watching me research tires for literally over a year and is just flabbergasted by the idea that someone could dive so deep into such a thing.

I know what it will look like with stock suspension and the 265/75s, and I'm all about it. But in your opinion, if I were to add 2" of lift at some point after installing the 265/75...would those tires now look undersized?

I have 16" rims and I think those sizes are only available in 17"? I think if i were to go skinny I would want to go with the 255/85/16...which is a 33" tall tire and I just assume would involve some trimming and/or other adjustments. There are also not a ton of options at that size and they're all super aggressive and expensive. A good thought exercise and I have considered it...I just dont like the look of the 31" skinny tires

makes total sense to me. I think you’ll be happy with a 265/75. I’m not sure about your needs but the fact that you’re putting skids on suggests that you’ll probably want to go with a c or e load tire I’m guessing? I’m running a 265/70 17 wildpeak at3w. It’s an excellent tire for my needs albeit a bit heavy (e load). I was able to fit mine on stock suspension no problem but be prepared for some mild rubbing on UCA while off-roading.

    also I’m a V6 in case you’re wondering.

I’m also running the 6112/5160 with RXT leaf pack.

Awesome - great to know and thanks for the photo for reference. Yeah I'm planning on doing duratrac c rated at 265/75 unless I decide to go with a different size. And I wish the wildpeaks came in a c rated version at the 265/75 size. The e rated at3w are like quite a bit heavier than the duratrac C rated version so I'm thinking i'll go w the duratracs.

Lol! Same here. It’s taking forever for my stock tires to wear out that I’ve managed to buy a roof rack, bed rack, and roof top tent. I’m torn between 265/70/17 and 285/70/17. The smart thing to do is going with 265/70/17…less headache. But another part of me loves the look of 285 tires…and around we go. My plan is to run Bilstein 5100 on the 4th perch which will give 1.55 inch of lift, and either a 1” block or AAL in the rear. It will look fine with 265 or 285 tires. I think 265 tires will look small with a 3” lift.

If you were to add 2” of lift, 265/75/16 will still look awesome…and so will 285/75/16. Here’s a link to a tacomaworld member that used 5100 on the top perch to get 2” lift and his truck looks great with 265/70/17 tires.

    Looks great!
How do you like the wildpeaks? Are they E load or standard load rating?

haha awesome and thank you - glad to know i'm not the only one in this situation. and i 1000% understand the allure of the larger tires. i think the 2" and the 265/75 is exactly what i'm looking for. I certainly dont want to be worrying about rubbing etc when going off road. seeing as the bumper from CBI wont likely be shipped until October, I'll likely do tires -> shocks -> armor

photos to follow when it all comes together...eventually lol

I’m going in circles with trying to balance it being an everyday driver and off-road capable. My current thought is about a 1.5 inch lift with bilstein 6112/5160 and 265/75r16 tires. Anyone have a similar setup or advice?

I feel your pain. In the end you should let your terrain dictate what you need. My truck is a DD as well and fuel economy, drivability, and use-ability in an urban setting are all important to me.

The trails I drive have some pretty gnarly rocks in them, coupled with some pretty uneven terrain so 2” of lift and 265/70/17 are the 90% solution. When I burn these tires out I am considering going to a 255/80 because the weight change will be negligible, but I don’t love that the Speedo will be off/ and don’t want to spend even more money just to correct that.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think will ever need more lift via suspension for where I live/what I do.
